Mate of mine has an S type 3.0. Not a bad car, I thought. The retro sytling thing isn't for me, really, but you can't see that when you're driving it. Had a reasonable turn of speed but handled for comfort more than for fun. Engine was a bit raspy when driven hard. I reckon the y32se just pips it to the post in refinement terms. Interior was nice and had a reasonable level of equipment I reckon. I know he had a few niggles with it.
Someone told me that pre-about 2000/2001 the suspension was straight from a Lincoln and handled like a boat but thereafter Jaguar convinced Fraud that they really needed to do their own setup and it improved.
The XJ 40. V8, on the other hand, is very nice. Another mate of mine had one. Picked me up in it and I had no idea what I was in, except that it was an XJ. A quick ride across Munich and I would have been convinced that it was a V12. Lovely, lovely engine. Very pokey and not a murmur from it, even when "pressing on".
