S-Type
« on: 22 November 2008, 19:00:28 »

Ran the mig through a car wash today (to wash the salt off - grrr)
Anyhoo - sitting behind an S-Type Jag and I was thinking - it looks wider than the mig - and I always thought it was quite a small car, anyway - looked nice, rear wheel drive, 3.0ltr, mmmm cheap as chips now.........is it a viable miggy replacement? (not that I'm looking to replace at the mo - still lovin the elite (amazing the amount of peeps who think its a private reg and cant be X-reg!!) :y

Year for year any S -type or X- type is going to be far more expensive than an equivalent Miggy.

Not such good cars either.

I would not want to own another X-type after the last one. :-* :-* :-*

I've always secretly hankered after an XJ - maybe a 4.0ltr V8 - slurp!!

didn't realise the S-Type was a proper car* of decent size - got me thinking - looks like the old Mk2 for my money - v nice - haven't been on my radar - but I'll have a look now

*ie rear wheel or 4-wheel drive

Yep S is a good size, longer than the X Type.

X has phenomenal boot but truely awful rear leg room.

Omega scores points over either in the build. internal trim and extras, in the cabin, are better in an omega too.

But that acceleration  8-)

i'd heard the X-type was a bit pi$h so maybe i lumped the S-type in the same category before

Well now let me see.

numerous electrical glitches,...flat battery on endless occasions left me stranded more than once...Charging problems so I was told.

Central locking problems..

No working speedo or cruise control....needed two new speedsensor rings to cure it.

But the final straw came when the kickdown became so jerky I would try anything not to use it..it came in with an real thump.

A real shame ...because when it was all going as it should it was a really lovely car.

People would notice and chat to me about it in the street.
I don't get that with the miggy ...sadly. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The X type doesn't seem to have the road presence that the S type had....

I had a X type for a few days once, did a 1000 miles in it.

Couldn't seat 4 adult with the same comfort that the Omega can, a bit cramped in fact, the one i had was the diesel model, wasn't the quickest diesel i have driven.

Had an S type for loan as well.....nice car, bit basic on the spec, and the seats had no support at all...no where near as comfy as an omega

Mate of mine has an S type 3.0. Not a bad car, I thought. The retro sytling thing isn't for me, really, but you can't see that when you're driving it. Had a reasonable turn of speed but handled for comfort more than for fun. Engine was a bit raspy when driven hard. I reckon the y32se just pips it to the post in refinement terms. Interior was nice and had a reasonable level of equipment I reckon. I know he had a few niggles with it.

Someone told me that pre-about 2000/2001 the suspension was straight from a Lincoln and handled like a boat but thereafter Jaguar convinced Fraud that they really needed to do their own setup and it improved.

The XJ 40. V8, on the other hand, is very nice. Another mate of mine had one. Picked me up in it and I had no idea what I was in, except that it was an XJ. A quick ride across Munich and I would have been convinced that it was a V12. Lovely, lovely engine. Very pokey and not a murmur from it, even when "pressing on".  :-*

Isn't there a problem with the 'S' type auto, sticking in reverse gear?
