Out of control Avatars
« on: 15 November 2008, 21:22:20 »

Using opera 9.6 browser, as I pretty much always have done, and half of the posts are completely obscured by unessecarily large Avatar pics.  Is there anything that can be done about it?

Which, from the Forum Guidelines, is
110x110, 50kb max.

120 is too wide, it covers the first part of the post.

I just got too fussed with messing with my avator so got rid of it completely as i couldn't get it the right size.  Avators are fine here on IE7 but I do see a lot of complaints from people about avator sizes.

To be honest, i preferred the site as it was altho I am probably in a minority with that opinion lol.

If you use IE7. Then there wouldn't be any conplaints.

People using firefox and opera should be banned.

Mmm interesting .... it's ok to break site rules on avatar sizes .... (and signature sizes) ... but users who obey these rules will be forced to use particular software or face punitive sanctions .....

Having posted details on oversized avatars I got my last post deleted on the subject stating

it served no useful purpose ;)

Which basically I took as I dont matter as I use Firefox.

I promise u, the remark on IE7 was said in jest.., I've used firefox and didn't like it.., but that's just my personal opinion and neither Jue nor I would ever suggest seriously that people should only use one thing.

But at the same time, I'm getting a little tired of being told I should use you instead of 'u' and other things that to me are the business of staff, not members. It makes this site feel like a bit of a police state, that you are being judged,  and less pleasant to be on.  And i do genuinely love the friendliness of this site.  Since the remark was made about my writing style.., and then the next time I came on a few days later, my avator (which i have tried to reduce even further in size without success).., it seems much much less so.  I have removed my avator and I've posted less as a result.

I take what you say in the spirit you mean it .. and hope you take my comments likewise  :y :y :y

I don't make the rules, and I find text speak very annoying, ok .. others like it, their choice ... but the rules are there for everyone, and that means ALL the rules IMHO .. we can't pick and choose which ones we wish to obey.

As for resizing avatars ... this is MY way of doing it .. might not work for everyone .... but certainly works for me...  :)

go to Imageshack ... http://imageshack.us

choose to upload the picture you want as an avatar using the "browse" option

Tick the "resize" box and choose "100 x75 (avatar)"
click on "host it"

After its uploaded you'll get a list of links .. copy the BOTTOM ONE - "direct link" into your profile space on OOF and you'll have an avatar of 100 x 75 pixels .. it really is that easy .. :)

You can also have a free account on imageshack and use it for all your pictures should you wish .. :)

I dont like text speak at all, but it took me ages to find out what SWMBO meant, then a member pointed me to a link on the forum with all the abbreviations on it.  (Cant acctually find it at the moment) but in a sence is a contradiction to the rules.

Whilst I was looking for it I found this link.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1164311267

With an oversized Avater thats animated and saying . . . . . ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Interesting welcome after reading the rules.

OK, I hear what u say. I haven't looked yet but if i am contravening the rules using 'u' instead of you.., and its a habit I would find impossible to break I shall only post on here very briefly if at all.  Its too restricting. I do use some, not all and not many text shortforms and its part of my style of writing online.  It makes me smile. Part of who I am - but if it offends people I just will not post.  Don't feel terribly welcome on here to be honest.

My avator is gone .., I spent ages trying to reduce it in size with only partial success so I won't be using it anymore.  I'm here to have fun, give and gain information,  not be irritated lol. The whole thing has become rather unpleasant in my mind.

I have to agree with Helen, We are here to have fun and make friends, not be at war with people over silly pics

If avatars are over-sized then i'm sure that TB can write into the scripting an auto resize script. :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

I think the avatar thing only really became an issue with the latest update of YABB forum software.  Lots of folks have now managed to get their avatars into the guideline sizes that have been there pretty much from day one although no real pressure was made to enforce things until the software update thing.

As to Timbuks avatar and its size etc, Doug is not on here as much as he was previously due to personal matters but, i have no doubt, he will amend it when he can.   :y
