Service history-what's it worth?
« on: 06 December 2008, 18:47:09 »

When i bought the miggy i was given a file of paperwork showing service and parts reciepts ,i thought "great it's been well looked after" however having spent some time working on the car it looks like the previous owners have been well taken for a ride -spark plugs only renewed on the easy(drivers) side,a pollen filter so dirty it could be the original! god knows what's been going on with it! anybody else had the same experience?

Bit naughty only doing half the plugs.......but pollen filter is a 'service extra' One of those items that if you dont ask to have it changed on a service.....then it doesnt!  ;)
Mind you my 2.2 was vx serviced until it was 60k miles old.....I discovered they wernt bothering to change the air filter....60k on the same air filter!! no wonder it was struggling a bit!!  >:(

Not worth the paper it's written on to me... I only trust my own servicing! ;D ;D

I tend to go by the visible condition. Mileage doesn't bother me either unless it's over 200k :y :y

A service history with a dealer is only good up to 3 years old. then any garage can service it up to is is 8 years old. After that forget it. It is so easy to forge a service history anyway.

If you intend to sell your car within 2 years of owning and it is less than 8 years old then service history may help to move it on, but if you keep it more than 2 years then service history will cost more and you loose more in depriciation so not worth it.
With say a 10 year old Miggy, I think most people with some brains would look at the condition of the car, factor in a cam belt change themselves and not be to bothered that 7 years ago some Vauxhall mechanic changed the oil on it.

Old saying, dont believe all you read. I have worked for garages and find the techs stamp their m8s service book nilly willly. A practice I hate. but it goes on. Its like the mot. When I bought my mig, I checked with vosa on the previous. For the past  3 years it has been reported that the nsf tyre has been an advisory NEAR LEGAL LIMIT. With 6000 mls in that period the tyre was never changed. Yet it stll passes????. What if the tester cant be arsed, is he really going to check it over in full?
Why not clock on to the job and go have a cup of tea? lets face it if he fails the car he might get the car to repair the failures (why bother... give it a pass and save the bother).Check the obvious and fail if it is obvious. Then again if the punter is a bit of a tw.t give it a good going over and make the punter pay. On servicing? what is a service? these days. change the oil and filter, kick the tyres and give the punter a bill.
How many owners know what a service involves? And lets face it if you know nought about a car how are you going to check if it has been done?and if you got time to check it you might s well do it yourself......I could go on with the scams for ever. Both history and Mots not worth paper written on when buying car
