Travelling for a car, knocking down a dealer.
« on: 18 December 2008, 22:12:24 »

Just wondered if any of you have travelled a fair distance for a car and got a dealer down on the price?

I seen a couple of cars i like on autotrader:

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_popup.jsp?did=19714&pageid=2&originalid=&gid=nogroup&tid=40&start=1&distance=0&adcategory=cars&channel=DEALERPAGE&id=200849324565886

Above is one of them.

I mean you can only ask so much over the phone, you really need to see the car to see if its described as advertised. However even if you do see a couple of things you dont like, the dealer knows you have come a long way, possibly 400 miles in my case. Therefore has you by the short & curlies.

Anyone any experience of this?

Pity you didnt ask last week, I was about 5 minutes away from there in a meeting.

Sure one of the Yorkshire contingent will give it a once over for you.

Don't forget potential bargains sites like http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1229467616   , for example  http://www.salvagesparefinder.co.uk/VAUXHALL+OMEGA+CDX+DTI-110891.htm    OK, it needs a small amount of work, but you have Markie up there, who is good for Miggy spares.

Yes, thanks thanks to the credit crunch and threatened car tax rise (postboned) at the moment there are lots of bargains around. See this thread, a 1998 Mig went for £155  :-* .

One bargaining point is to ask when the cambelt and tensioners were changed. They should be done every 40k miles. If the seller doesn't know, then treat with caution, cause it  could go at any minute which means new head.

Alternatively listen to what he says and just go "Oh, shouldn't it have been changed some time ago ?", or " Did they change the tensioners at the same time, its the tensioners that go", and  negotiate a good £275 discount ( parts cost  £75-£100 ish)  a good bargaining ploy, which I am sure some people have used  ;D ;D ;D

i took a mate upto Tyneside Newcastle to view a BMW 320D SE Tourer that was forsale by a dealer!

we spoke to him on the phone he totally over described the car he wanted £7000 for it and we got him down to £6000! he shown us the recipt for the car of Astle BMW for £5950 so he only made £50 profit lol! and he had the car valeted!

I travelled 150 miles or so for my last Omega (wanted a late V6 with low miles). Just don't give the impression it is unusual for you to be that far away from where you live and don't give them any indication that you are desperate to buy the car at any cost. Set your limit and stick to it. If you get the right car it's probably worth the miles and time..... Lot of people travel round the country all the time and lots of people travel to look at cars....

If you can get a few folks from here to check it out first, all the better though..... unless they're after one themself!!  ;)

Been in this situation before (drove from Nottingham to Bideford in Devon for our first Omega)

We bought that car and it was already cheap so we didnt even try to knock him down

I have travelled by train up to Durham from Nottingham to view a car before, only to find out it was totally misdescribed yet the idiot STILL expected me to pay for it and drive it away.....

Better to keep your money mate if you are not happy and show the dealer you wont be buying the car if you are not totally happy with the deal.

Make him sweat, he has the  car to sell and there are plenty of others for you to choose from.

If its the right car buy it, if not walk away mate.

That car is not far from me, but I'm not an omega owner so I dont have to be nice. Look at it yourself, I cant be bothered. :)
