The belt-cam FIAT/Alfa/GM 1.9 litre 150PS diesel is very impressive. Not as gruff and ‘sudden’ as VAG’s new 140PS 2.0 litre. But with masses of mid-range torque that fling the car forwards in 3rd and 4th gear. I can’t imagine any mid-managers relegated from their 3.0 litre V6s feeling short-changed in that department. Vauxhall certainly gets its gearing right these days. The 150 pulls around 35mph per 1,000rpm in 6th which is not only pleasant and relaxing, it means that a legal 70 you’re at the perfect revs to quickly increase speed if you need to without changing down. And in contrast to last week’s Astra turbo, instead of drinking petrol at 30 – 35mpg you’re sipping diesel at 40 – 45mpg.

im with you on this Danny, i myself have been looking at these and am contemplating replacing the miggy early next year,
yes the miggy is a lovely car and great on long runs but i have to look at practicality
the vectra is 6 groups lower on insurance (so a drop there)
and is a lot better on fuel :y

my mind still isnt set, looking at 1.8 petrol now ;D

my corsa will still sell for around the £2500 mark (the little chavs just love them) and i could get a vectra C possibly as new as 04 plate with reasonable spec and average mileage for that!

the look of the vectra in my pic has grown on me a hell of a lot, moreso than omegas now

The 3.2 Vectra C I had was a nightmare to put the power down in, loads of torque but no traction to go with it.

Mrs LD had an 02 plated 1.8 as a company car and it literally drank petrol... I'm a fairly economical driver and struggled to get much more than 300 miles to the tank... The 2.0 DTi I had was on an 03 plate and was OK... Still managed to get it sideways in the wet but was really thrashing it! This did comfortably 450-500+ miles to the tank. Add to that the tax bands and smelly oil is the only way I'd go in a veccy. They are OK but I think they're a bit bland! ;) ;)

Get another mig... You know you want to ;D ;D :y :y

I wish you lived a bit closer as I have an 08 1.9 CDTI SRI on my drive at the moment, its a hire car which I picked up as my last job of the day. The company has 100,s of these, the one I like is the Elite with leather, etc. TBH I would not like to be the 2nd or 3rd owner of one of these, the one outside has 11000( eleven thousand ) miles on, airbag and safeguard warning lights are on, front tyres have already been replaced, trim and upholstery looks dated already, nice to drive, powerful, 6 speed economy but as others have said, a little bland. I am in the lucky position of driving various new cars all day, all shapes and sizes, I'll list my favourites and the horrible ones.
Top dogs;
Volvo V50 and V70 diesel estates, fabulous, well built.
Passat TDi.
Focus and Focus S-Max.
Land Rover Freelander 2. 2.2 TD Auto - impressive if you like that sort of thing.
Saab 93 210 bhp.
Astra 1.9 CDTI - flying machine - 50 mpg in 6 speed format.
Merc CLS 320 CDI ( lottery winner territory )

Hounds;
Zafira - most troublesome car on the fleet, awful to drive, rattles everywhere, crap gearchange.
Mondeo - nice to drive but bodywork chips turn to rust instantly.
Fiat Bravo.

Most uncomfortable - Porsche Carrera S or Chevrolet Matiz - both hurt.

I would put the Vectra in the middle, nice engine and transmission, but poor quality and STUPID indicators spoil the car, we have also had a few with the front screen cracking in the same place.

I think that many manufacturers build their cars to last the warranty period, they have no interest in the 2nd and 3rd owners or when out of warranty. These are of course only my personal opinions and others will have different experiences and views of the cars listed. I drive about 1500 miles a week delivering these cars. Hope this adds some fuel to the fire.
