tony blair is two faced
« on: 09 January 2007, 16:19:55 »

like we didn t know but how two faced is this???

taken in full from the yahoo news page:-

Tony Blair has said the rising impact of carbon emissions on the environment will not stop him jetting abroad for his holidays.

The comments have angered campaigners who say he needs to set a personal example and reduce the impact of his own carbon footprint on the environment.

"I personally think these things are a bit impractical actually to expect people to do that," he said when asked if he should take his holidays closer to home.

The comments come after a row
between one of his ministers and low-cost airline chief Michael O'Leary. Environment Minister Ian Pearson singled out Ryanair as "the irresponsible face of capitalism" in the fight to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr O'Leary in turn said Mr Pearson "didn't know what he was talking about" and attacked green taxes on air travel as just another tax.

And now he appears to have been backed by Mr Blair who cautioned against setting people "unrealistic targets" or ending cheap air travel.

He said: "The danger, for example, if you say to people 'Right, in Britain, you know, you're not going to have any more cheap air travel', everybody else is going to be having it.

"So you've got to do this together and you've got to do it in a way that doesn't end up actually putting people off the green agenda by saying you must not have a good time anymore and can't consume."

He added that advances in sciences and technology are the key to reducing carbon emissions.

Friends of the Earth head of campaigns Mike Childs said: "It's disappointing that Tony Blair is refusing to set an example on tackling climate change.

"But it is even more disappointing that his Government is failing to take decisive action to cut UK emissions.

"Aviation is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide in the UK. But rather than taking steps to curb the rise in air travel, the Government is encouraging it by giving the aviation industry multi-billion pound tax-breaks and allowing UK airports to expand."

so why is his government so determined to get cars off the road?

he says he cant tell britain no more cheap air travel everyone else can have it.... doesnt the same apply to petrol?

also he mustn't put us off the green agenda "by saying you must not have a good time anymore and can't consume" well driving my car is having a good time to me !

sorry if this seems daft but it got my goat good style

Its just another way of getting money from us.

It wouldn't be so bad if the money was taken and used to subsidize solar heating, energy efficient light bulbs, public transport projects etc but, its not, its used to throw into the bottomless pit that is the NHS and other no hope projects.

We are told we should all be driving small low polluting cars yet, far more environmental damage and energy is used to make a car than it ever uses during its entire life of use....

There is one single thing that could reduce the UK's emissions by quite a few percent over a few years period.......remove VAT on energy efficient light bulbs and put a 1 pound tax on the non-efficient versions (i.e. incandescent). This would:

a) Move the UK onto low energy lamps
b) Accelerate the development into low energy lamps.

And of course there are far more applications in which this approach could be used.....

If they want to save the planet so bad, then why tax users of vegetable oil 45p a litre when it's used as a road fuel, even though it's 70% + cleaner than diesel?

The rest of europe don't tax it

The goverment are just money grabbing arse**les

I'm afraid i have to agree as i suspect 90% of the population will. The Government is just using the green issue as a money making scheme via taxes
If the enviroment was a real issue that concerned them they wouldn't be funding the coal/fossil fuel industry and coal power stations in China but instead giving them money to fund non or lower polluting was of producing power. Instead of pumping tons of CO into the atmosphere

Now thats two faced.   Like so many things in this country pick on and penalise the soft targets but leave the hard world issues alone as it might hurt them >:(

Sorry for the rant  but feel better now. I'll go and mow my lawn with my Rolls Royce  turbofan jet engined lawnmower ;D

Not too sure if i agree with the energy efficent bit by the government etc.

At one point i had two houses and rented one out to someone on benifets.....while they were renting it i got local comp to inject the walls, insulate the loft and they also fitted low energy light bulbs everywhere they could , plus fitted draft excluders on the outside doors.....all paid for by the government on a 100% grant....so carnt grumble about that...

But do agree with the rest......and ive never been a Tony Blair fan.....i always vote against him.....since he closed a tax loophole...that the Tories allowed for small businesses (1 man band type)
And the Tories have promised (if you believe them!) that the tax loophole will be opened up again if they get back into power!

Mark's absolutely right about the energy cost of cars. In fact, if you scratch the surface of this whole green car issue, it gets even more interesting than that.

The "Dust to Dust" lifetime energy cost of a Hummer H3 ($1.949 cents per mile) is less than that of the Honda Civic Hybrid ($3.29 cents per mile).

Pretty fair assessment, I'd say.

Fully agree with all of the above and I thought these same things when I read the article.

Blair and the Labour party have destroyed this country.  They may not have raised income tax for example, but they tax everything else and, next up, I am sure it will be the air that we breathe!

What Mark says about low energy light bulbs, the NHS and other failed projects and car energy use is, in my opinion, completly true.  Working at a Medical company I see the effects of the NHS.........................

I would like to form a party with the slogan "Let's put the Great back into Great Britan".

Has anyone head the next environmental tax?  The London Low Emission Zone.  They will want to charge non conforming vehicles (Diesel Vans etc.) £100 PER DAY to drive in the zone!  Utter madness.

Better go now or I may become really annoyed............
