When I was on a school trip skiing many years ago some guy was sledging...failed to stop before the protective barrier, front of sledge dropped into the ditch in front of it and flipped him over the barrier hitting the top of it as he went over...breaking both arms and legs...

We laughed...we were young! lol

EVERYTHING we do has risk associated with it, you can minimise it as much as you like but, it will still be there.

Sometimes the odds work against you.

Bottom line is, shit happens and always will!

It's sad, but Mark's spot on with his comments. Tragedies happen.

Believe it or not a parent at my daughter's school was overheard this morning saying that the school should not have reopened today "for health and safety reasons"!  ::)

Accidents happen. We try to minimise them, but they will continue to happen whatever we do.

Yep....there were those on the radio this morning saying 'what would have happened if your child had slipped over on the way to school'

My thought was, the same as would ahppen whilst they were out playing whilst not at school!

I dont think the schools should shut at all.....unless its REALLY bad, which it wasn't

My daughters school shut yesterday (it didn't need to) from what I can gather due to teachers snowed in.

Probably more due to teachers not being arsed to make the effort like the rest of us

Perhaps if they were docked a days pay they might be more encouraged!

It was very rare the schools closed in the 70's when I was at school, the only time I remember was when the boiler broke down.

These days I think they use it as an excuse to save money.

I was horrified when I heard this on the news as it brought back a bad memory of how these things can easily happen.
I lived just ouside Biggar ,Lanarkshire about 17 years ago in a very rural area and during exactly the same circumstances ( schools closed due to snow )  was sledging with my daughter and her friend on a steep hill . They were only about 7 at the time and didn't have the mass/ weight to go too fast or too far. I foolishly had a go and went absolutley flying down this hill which was far too steep really for sledging and panicked when I realised that I just couldn't control or worse stop ,the bloody sled. The hill was actually a farmers field which was surrounded by a stock proof fence which had barb along the top .
I threw myself off the sledge more through blind fear  than courage and got away with very minor injuries. I immediatley realised my utter stupidity in allowing children to play in that unseen danger.
I feel very sorry for the girl's family.
