Misuse of Disabled Parking Spaces & Access

Yes I know  ::) it's another petition, but if you or someone you know, knows what it's like to be disabled, perhaps you will understand.

Please give your support at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Disabled-Rights/

With the risk of sounding insensitive, this is going to cost businesses, governments and everyone in general billions. On the fence with this one, as there really arent enough severely disabled people out there to need it.

My real irritation is the selfish, thoughtless, lazy, IQ dleiquent morons who park in disabled spaces but are not blue badge holders!!  >:(

Generally it is businessmen in expensive cars/Chelsea tractors.

SWMBO mum is disabled (MS) and when I am over in NI, I often take her out shopping.
It REALLY p*sses me off to find disabled parking spaces have been taken by a*rseholes who can't be bothered to park a bit further away from the shops!

The spaces are closer to the shops and wides than other spaces for a reason.
I have to take out a wheelchair, and then get her into it. Not easy in normal spaces!

I wish shopping centres would actually clamp people who blatantly abuse these spaces as I see it being the only way to stop these thoughtless t*ssers!

I have had a few run ins with people I have seen just sitting in a space, just waiting form someone, especially when they have taken the last space.
Suffice to say I am not a small person, and can be quite intimidating if they don't agree to my initial polite request... ;)
I point out to them when they argue, please go call the security/Police and explain what exactly you are doing parking in this area....  ;)

OK, rant over... just something I am passionate about, disabled rights.

I've parked in a disabled spot a couple of times :o

Albeit only for a few minutes while I pop to a cash point or something. I always thought stuff like parking in a disabled space was already illegal? The government have also already bought in regulations that force offices, shops and even websites to be more accessible to all. I know this because friends businesses have been hit with it, and our company website has just had to be re-done to make it accessible to people with eyesight difficulties, and interactivity disabilities.

I dont get what this petition is about?

It says to make misuse illegal.

It's something that really gets me too, why active people can't walk a few yards is beyond me.
I'm afraid lack of respect & are ignorance are a growing trend.

It reflects the ignorance and selfish nature of some of todays people....

When the father in law was ill and had a disabled badge I couldn't park in Sainsburys carpark because some tosser in an X5 had parked in one. I parked across the back of him whilst he went wth the mother in law into the shop and I stood and watched....the owner was realy annoyed but, learnt a valuable lesson....he waited 45 minutes to get out.....

I think that unless you're a permit holder, parking is illegal in disabled bays on a public road or public areas. However, I don't think this is the case in supermarkets, superstores and such like, they are purely advisory. There is still no excuse for normal people to use them, and it infuriates me when I see perfectly able bodied men and women doing so. As LB66 said above, these are nearly always people in expensive cars who probably think they are better than everyone else and can do what they want because they've got a few quid!! >:( I think supermarkets should be able to employ wardens with powers to clamp these barstewards!

That would explain it. Private car parks are out of government juristiction, so yes, confusion solved.

I also dislike people like that.

Well i see absolutely nothing wrong when i go to the supermarket at 8 o clock in the evening and park on the disabled spaces when there are another 20 free. I prefer doing that rather than being upset because of parking dents. But then again i like to follow my own rules based on common sense.

Sadly an attribute that a large proportion of the population don't possess :(

I agree with the parking thing... there's no excuse for it.  We've got a company car park and it's too small which means there's always people parked in the disabled bays.  The office is visited by many, many people and I feel really sorry for anyone who would actually benefit using their blue badges and parking in the wider disabled bay.
Looking out the window I see more 4x4's, Merc's, Beamer's, Jags etc parking on the double yellows, in the disabled bays, on pavements etc than others (not to tar everyone with the same brush, I have to admit there's still a few regular motors amongst them!)  Being a company car park on private land there's nothing done, even though we do actually have a huge overflow carpark that is literally a 20 seconds extra walk away.

Even when it's the middle of the night in a deserted car park I still get a surge of guilt when I contemplate parking in the disabled bays...  but I don't always agree with the blue badge either.  From what I understand (and feel free to correct me - I don't understand much these days  ::)) the blue badge allows the holder to park on double yellows a well and that just doesn't always make sense at all, adding to the congestion etc.

As for the building changes to allow disabled access, I can understand it for new builds, but it just can't be possible either physically or financially for all business's in older property to make everything nice and accessible for everyone.

And one more thing, to round of my rant, I'm not sure how the blue badges are handed out but I get the feeling that there are a minority, and I sincerely mean that - I really do appreciate that some people genuinely need them, who perhaps don't really require them, and perhaps their realtives/friends should perhaps leave them with the person that needs them rather than think their car is now exempt.

Oooooh - while I'm still going (sorry - will end soon) how come those with the blue badges, again it's from my own understanding - correct away, are exempt from parking charges in car parks?  I don't quite get that either...

No offence - just purely my own views, right or wrong - as I say, feel free to point me in the right direction (if there is one - think this is a probably bit of a minefield of legislation, political correctness etc...)

I have always assumed the except from charges is down to the fact that a disabled person generally has little choice but to drive somewhere, an able bodied person could cycle and therefore also be except from charges.  (but that is just my guess!)

Oh, and ease off on the Jag drivers  ;)
