I just wanted to pass on my recent experiences of eBay as a word of warning to you all....

Over the past 5 or 6 years I've bought a few items off ebay - mainly car bits, ink cartridges etc, probably only about 70-80 things in all with 100% feedback. I connect from a  very secure (heavily firewalled) connection and use a high security password etc.

3 times last year I had my account suspended by ebay due to someone fraudulently accessing it and selling stuff - the last time was a load of dodgy ipods and I only found out when my email was filled with disgruntled customers!  I informed ebay and told the buyers to get in touch too.  In the end ebay closed my account due to 'continued seller dissatisfaction', despite me extensively arguing my case that I had NEVER sold anything on ebay.  I managed to re-register under a new account, different email adddress etc but they have now linked the two accounts and closed that too - even though I'm still waiting for something to be delivered that I bought & paid for on Monday.

So, I appealled yet again only to be told to go away and if I keep sending emails they may be read but won't be replied to.....

In short their security measures must be shocking if this can happen.  I now have no way of buying anything through ebay.  Whilst this is irritating, it's not as annoying as the fact that I did everything possible to secure my account, but the b@st@rds atill got in!!

I thought the same - to me it should be obvious going on IP address, selling patterns, history of items traded etc.....

Obviously the most common way is the spoofed emails. Never, ever, ever click on links in emails, no matter who sent it.

Lucky guess on password is another - I've heard that accounts not used much are targetted by the hackers, as it will likely take longer to get noticed.

I have had a similar one recently where they detected fraudulent use of my account before I did, which was pretty good.  However a week on and I still cant get into my account.  I have a dispute ongoing and I have missed a boat trailer auction that was purfect for my needs.

I will cut and paste the email thread later on to show you how incompetant they really are.

Believe me - I'm very careful with spoof emails etc.  I had the credit card and bank account done a couple of years ago and have been exceptionally careful since then

My account was hacked into a few years back while I was on holiday.  In the time that I was away, it was hacked, a load of fake watches listed, ebay saw that it had been hacked, and suspended my account.  I came home to a load of crazy emails and an ebay account I couldn't use...

Knowing your bro, I guessed my most common emails above wouldn't apply to you, unless by chance they managed to crack the password.

Do you use a different password for ebay?  Remember, website owners may have access to passwords you use for that site...

I apply a GPO to Mrs TheBoy about her windows password...  ...I got some stern looks initially

yep - always use separate passwords and change them regularly.  I think I have fallen foul to ebays rule of -4 feedback means you get the boot, ie I didn't buy enough stuff to get sufficient +ve feedback to counteract all the -ve received by the fraudster.

So the moral is - the more +ve feedback you get the more you can get away with ripping people off......
