I hear what your saying, but from my experience it depends how much access your particular marque want you to have without the genuine reader. For instance the snap on appears to give far more in depth access to vag and Bmw cars, various live data streams are possible. Volvo though wont play.
You get fault codes and drive train iirc and thats your lot. Also seen stuff on net describing difficult access to various "deeper in" ecu's. In other words they have deliberatly made diagnosis difficult for non volvo readers/scanners. The bosch tool is the same.... All in my limited experience of course.

I really feel for small independents re this. They cant possibly acquire all genuine readers. And no generic reader is fully up to the job.  A good reason to specialise in one make imho.

Quite clearly the case, not conviced on the 'difficult' bit, its probably more down to the lack of demand (Volvo for example being a small selling mrque with falling sales and dealerships)

Anyway, not surprised the selector switch did bugger all, how could it, its not dynamicaly moving as you drive and the gears shift.

ps jpat say the solenoids are not available seperately from the valve body, which is £900.

However volvo have the seperate parts on their system.

Good work, thankyou Mkaminski. :-) that will come in handy when the valve body comes off. Local garage has a bench tester for the valves body apparently.

They also had a contact near me that with a genuine volvo reader which gave no more info except 0100 poor shift quality, this suggested to clean and check the connections that connect the connector switch to the loom to ecu. Ran out of time after cleaning the
multiplugs with switch cleaner. This will need further
examination obviously before we examine the valve body.
Further thoughts invited if any.

Cheers

Chris.

Ps just seen this exact same box bolted to a 2.2 52plate vectra. Which is quite worrying as my father in law has just acquired a 1.9 auto vectra to replace the above Volvo.

Is it 3D transmission where you will check solenoids/valve body? It's good to know any auto service around.

...The 55 50/51 SN is installed in a multitude
of vehicles, and there will be variations to
the unit and this data. A similar valve body will
bolt to a GM, Volvo, Saturn, Nissan, Saab, Opel
or Renault.
Failure to test and recognize the differences
among them can create hours of additional
effort...
