Please help.........Astra MOT Emissions failure
« on: 04 April 2009, 01:21:28 »

My sister took her W reg Astra in for an MOT yesterday (Friday) but sadly it failed on Emissions.

Any ideas what could be wrong with it based on the results given below?

Many thanks in advance for any advice given.

Martyn

What type of driving does your sister do? Small local trips to shops?

If so, I would take it out for a good long thrashing! This should warm the CAT right up, which often bring them back to life!

Other than that, give it a service (Oil + Air Filter, and maybe Spark Plugs depending on age / condition).

Also check for any airleaks / exhaust leaks as this can/will effect emissions!

Mostly tootling around I think mate, definately doesnt rag it about......

To my untrained eye just looks like the CO is too high.......Does that just mean that the filters could be dirty?

Will find out later on when was its last service if i can

Thanks

The CO2 is not that far out, I always add a petrol addative about a week before the test and change the oil and filter and air filter, and give it a thrashing up the motorway the day or the day before the test.
If the car has just pootled about town, then a thrashing could well sort your problem.
Good luck!

She did say that the tester reckoned it was "running rough" and rich

Temp showing on test result as warm, but trying to contact her now and her blinking phone is off

Shes in Leicester Mark

Not sure if it is allowed on the road though failing its mot before the old one ran out?

from her email last night

"Attached is a copy of the emissions test. The tester also said that the engine sounds like "its running rough" and "running rich" due to the amount of unburnt fuel coming through the exhaust emissions"

i would try,, cleaning throttle body, and evap system , also blow out/change air fitler  /check MAF sensor and genrally a good service with some redex and a good drive
wouldnt think it would be stat as it passed 2nd fast idel

The car was allegedly fully serviced a couple of weeks ago so will be expecting to see new sparkies and filters in it when the brother in law brings it up here tomrw
