Stupid Motorcyclists!
« on: 05 April 2009, 16:23:23 »

Seems the 5 that overtook me on double solid white lines earlier on the A339 between Lasham & Basingstoke have a deathwish!
As Kevin will doubtless confirm, that road is notorious for motorcycle accidents & fatalities
My son-in-law (local area car driver Hampshire Constabulary) has had to scrape up many of them
Total irresponsibility! >:(

thats how bikers get a bad name, i am just happy to cruise about, and only overtake when there is plenty of space, room, and a good view.

M4 this afternoon, bunch of 'bikes, 6 or 7  ... all biggish (well big back wheels anyway !!) weaving all over the place, I was in middle lane doing 60 overtaking a truck, they went past me in outside lane, got really close to a Shogun ahead of them, then pulled right across in front of me onto the hard shoulder and went down the inside of a coach before swinging back out to the outside lane.... I guess all done at about 90 mph... then they opened up and pulled away pretty quickly.

Would only have taken a moment for it all to have gone very wrong :(

Shame really as all bikers seem to get tarnished with the same brush due to a small minority of selfish bikers...

Is it selfishness or stupidity?
I ride bikes as well but would never consider something as dangerous as that!

Remember though that the biker can usually see further than you cos he's higher up than you. And double white lines don't mean NO OVERTAKING, you're not allowed  to cross them (apart from slow moving tractors etc) clicky so if you can overtake without crossing them, as a bike can ....
The rider of the quad bike that had to overtake the line of traffic this afternnoon had a death wish. No helmets either.

They were all well over the lines & my traktor was travelling at 60mph

Wasn't really defending them, I wasn't there, just offering another point of view! ;) ;) ;)
We went to Southport today (tried to see the sea .... but gave up! ;D) and there were 100's of bikes out & about, mostly behaving themselves though. :y :y

I very nearly took out a biker on the A339 once. I was overtaking another car on a 1/2 mile long straight. Thought I saw something - so slowed up and pulled back in.

"Something" turned out to be a bike coming the other way doing about a ton with his front wheel about 4' up in the air. This was at twilight when it's less easy to see other vehicles. He might well have had his headlight on - if he had it was illuminating the trees.

The problem is, that road is a good driver's road when it's quiet. Some lovely bends but also some long straights that are pretty boring at 60 MPH when you're pumped up with adrenalin and driving / riding at 10/10ths or stuck behind the usual 45 MPH "A" road dawdlers. When I'm up at the airfield I often hear bikes accelerate flat out through 6 gears along one of those straights.

It's really not worth trying to enjoy that road unless you catch it empty but still the bikers pile down there on any sunny afternoon and quite often there's carnage, because so much overtaking is required when it's busy.

I can't say much as i misbehave BIGSTYLE on a bike. Guilty of everything. I know it's dangerous & irresponsible, i agree totally but adreneline gets the better of me. The buzz you get when riding like a tw*t is irresistable. I'll stand up & admit it despite the scorn from sensible riders. A ban for me would mean losing my house, so i no longer ride.
Been toying with the idea of a trike though. I like the old biker style from the 60's/70's & would happy to cruise on something like that without killing myself. Never took my bike test either & won't. You almost have to go to uni know!!!!! :y

Wasnt there ,so cant comment ,but there are many circumstances where it is easy and effortless to overtake on a bike where it would be bordering on suicide in a car, much smaller more maneuverable with much more acceleration. :y

True, the accelleration on a sports bike is phenomenal...but crossing a solid white line, even when it is safe enough for a bike to do, is just asking for heafty points.

I drive a 38 tonne artic, and I know we all get annoyed at following them at 40 mph on single carriageways, but the stupidity I see from some bikers (not all i must say) is outstanding. If it all went wrong there is nothing I could do to stop in time.

38 tonnes versus 600kg bike, I am sure I would have nightmares for the rest of my life.

Also in an artic we often can't see them till it's point of no return (Blindspots are terrible on an artic)

it is quite difficult to comprehend the performance if you havent experienced it. And likewise, its quite difficult for a biker that doesnt drive a car to understand how some vehicles could possibly travel sooo slowly.

Remember sitting behind many a driver and being patient, picking my moment and overtaking with plenty of room, and yet once past and up to the speed limit(sometimes)look in the mirror to see a look of total shock and disgust on the drivers face. Quite often swerveing or breaking for no reason, as they are behind me already.

Bikes respond in a fraction of the time of a car with a twice as alert rider(hopefully)and processing info at twice the rate with no distractions. The bike inspires confidence, its higher up can move road position to for a better view, and will be looking further ahead, what ever they where doing will most likely "feel" perfectly safe to them.

Having been to the tt and watched at and ridden the same points of the course on mad Sunday, what looks totally insane as a spectator, feels nothing like as dangerous as i rider.

Point is two points of view are poles apart.

However the laws point of view.... Well basically massive self controle is needed from a biker along with similar levels of concentration. If you ride a bike with the same attention level as driving a car, imho, you wont last too long, which is part of the problem. When paying attention you see more "opportunities"... without self controle the law gets broken so quickly there seems little point bothering.

We use to call it TT rules. Stick to 30s and 40s and pin it everywhere else.(no national speed limit in the isle of man last i hurd)

Not defending it, its why i packed it in. Just another other point of view.
