caravan and a 2.2

does anyone use a 2.2 petrol for towing a caravan? how does it perform? car is auto, do you have to upgrade the oil cooler?

I do realise a V6 would be better, and would like to p/ex my 2.2 for a V6 estate, but thats not an option at the moment

any thoughts and comments welcome

I used to use a 2.0 Auto, needed to thrash it but it managed OK

My 2.2 tows my van ok, but what van are you planning to tow with yours?

I haven't chosen one yet, we're just thinking about returning to caravanning after a few years lay off, I'm experienced towing, and as the kids are all older now, only maybe need a 2 berth, so weight shouldn't be an issue, even with the 85% guideline.

I'm just a bit unsure of the power a 2.2 gives, taking the weight of the car into consideration

I used to tow a caravan with a total weight when loaded of 1450kg, the 2.2 petrol miggy had no problems.

Unlikely an extra oil cooler required - the std oil cooler should be good enough

Not much in it, I got from 16 to 20 out of the petrol 2.0 auto depending on fuel and hills all I will say is BP not supermarket.

2.6 from 11 to 19 on LPG 11 was head wind all through Cornwall and doing DC speeds UP hill

Lets just say that when it was side winds I was down to about 30 and up a couple of steep hills I was speeding.

I came off the A30 due to the wind and went up the A39 as it had a lot less side winds.

TBH we should have gone home a different day. I was using every one of the 180bhps

I have a 2.0, and only tow a trailer tent so no probs.
I don't think I'd fancy a caravan on the back though.
I have always said the 2.0 was a little underpowered for the Omega body.

It'll do the job but I must confess I love pulling our Pikey Palace with the 3.0 V6... It's just effortless and leaves everything standing on the hills :y :y :y

It's even easier with a 3.2 ... :)  Effortless, quiet, comfortable .. and cruise control is mandatory to prevent exceeding the speedlimits...

The miggy is the hardest car in the world to drive at 50 mph !!!!! it just keeps wanting to go faster, despite having 1600Kgs hanging off the back !!

I know what you mean... I normally set the cruise at an indicated 60 on the Motorways and it doesn't drop from that regardless of the terrain :y :y :y

Did have a few "How Fast am I going" moments once off the Motorways and Dual Carriageways though... Better slow down methinks ::) ::) ::)
