Water shouldn't kill anything electrical provide its not powered up at the time. It will promote corrosion if left, so I always try and dry the item as fast as poss. Once I repaired a laptop motherboard that had Coke spilt on it by washing the board in soap and water, and drying quickly. Surprise it actually worked (and is still working !)

Same here Ken!
I washed an IBM motherboard in the sink at work (just in plain tap water) and used a clean paint brush to loosen the coke which was ALL over it! (Boss thought I was mental!)
Dried it off with the airline, then shoved it in the front of the Air con unit at work for the rest of the day.
Next day I fitted it back in the laptop, only to find out that the motherboard was working all along! And it was the keyboard that was faulty (IBM Power buttons are in the keyboard!).
Ordered a new keyboard, and AFAIK that laptop is still working today!

Few years back a 128mb Compact Flash card went through the washer... I prised off the cover, and left it to dry out over night. Recovered all my photos from it too! - Down side is that packed in about a month later

Guess it must have corroded something, unless it was just a coincidence.
