Camcover gasket source - question
« on: 28 April 2009, 19:20:02 »

I was talking to a chap at autovaux the other day.

I asked him about camcover gaskets - and he informed me they can supply both banks, incl O rings, for £25.

I thought "ho ho ho" and told him "I Really only want to use a genuine item for this - can you source me a GM branded one?"

He said "I could, but they come from exactly the same factory, and are the same product, as you would get from VX.

Which having received gaskets from Auto Vaux some years ago I can tell you is 'dangle berries'.

They get them from Elring and Elring dont make the cam cover gaskets for Vx

Cheers Mark

He did say they used to come from Elring - but he said they then changed their source to V something or other - can't recall where  :-/

most of the stuff they claim come from same factory, even when they sold elring ones.  I have little faith in them now.

even if its the same oem, the spec of the product can differ from what they sell as pattern, and what they supply to gm

I bought their genuine gaskets last year with "O" rings and sealant.
Cost me about £45=00 all in and can honestly say ,I might aswell have burnt the money...not genuine and leaked after a few weeks.
As has been said over and over..if you buy anything other than genuine GM from dealers they wont last...I can vouch for that

Or the OOF shop (when we can get them), as we source ours from the GM dealer network

It is interesting that you should say that. I had a similar conversation with autovaux recently. when I asked for genuine gaskets he said he had some that were made in the same factory as GM ect.. ect.. I then said I had heard that after market gaskets are prone to leakage, and he replied " we used to have a problem with complaints about inferior gaskets but since we have sourced these from Elring who make gaskets for GM we havent had any problems" A set of cam cover gaskets duly arrived in a bag marked 'Elring' but I was a bit disconcerted when I realised that there were 2 pairs of gaskets moulded together and I would have to seperate them with a stanley knife.
They looked more like they had come out of a lucky bag than a factory that makes genecticaly modified gaskets.

Buy the right ones...do it once and they will last and not leak oil...all others are a lottery and from numerous threads on this forum, they are not worth the effort in fitting something that is almost certainly going to fail.

Oddly enough they did, but when I messaged him to start off with he said they buy non-genuine and genuine so it was luck of the draw really I suppose.
