Every home in the UK is to be fitted with a 'smart energy meter' to monitor power use and hopefully reduce bills.

The meters are planned to be installed by 2020 under plans announced this morning by the Government.

They have to equip 26 million homes, and several million businesses before they realise the full savings from redundant meter readers. In the meantime, look out for price hikes to pay up front for the equipment and the on-going installation costs.

OK, I put my hand up and say that now I've investigated the story more, it would appear that there should be no cost to the consumer.

It is right nowadays to assume the worst of our political masters!  Usually, in 99% of cases, your assumption Nick would have been correct!
