I got a little caught out by Ireland going metric.

Came off the ferry at Rosslaire speed limit 100.

Too much traffic to get much over 80.

Then the customer at Wexford I was visiting told me it was in km/h.

I actually don't use metric, don't like the units very much, stupid things like km/h and cl ect ect.

Yes I use litres, kilogrammes, metres, seconds, newtons ect.

The SI system.

Nothing wrong with speed in ms^-1

I recall reading in MCN many years ago that France had a similar test that involved riding through a "greasy road" section. This was until a woman was killed on the test. There were calls to have it removed from the test but they were ignored, so the site was dug up overnight.
The authorities re-layed the section. The following night it was dug up with mechanical diggers. 
The "greasy road" ride was soon removed from the test

I thought the main road out of the port was OK.

Last time I went there (Punt->Earhole conversion) the ferry was diverted to Dublin, took me 4 hours to drive back to Wexford (near Rosslaire) and the driving was a bit scarey, luckily I had a big car to bully back with.

I'm guessing you had a bit more suspension travel then me. It's "a bit scarey" at times, all right, but the traffic on the twisty lanes is non-existent.

I think its about time the car learning / testing procedure got a bit harder.


Seems daft that anyone once they get a provisional license can get in a car and do anything but motorway with no training!

It should be
1. Pass Theory Test
2. Pass CBT
3. Get Issued provisional license for normal learning
4. Take (extended) test,  pass and get limited power license, display new driver plates.
5. 2 years later, if history ok, get full license.

Trouble is I suppose, enough people drive around illegally already, make it harder and more will likely follow

I think its about time the car learning / testing procedure got a bit harder.

There was nothing really wrong with the original test IMO, the problem (if anything) is lack of common sense (something we all suffered from when we got a full license at 17).

What gets my goat is that we restrict 17 year olds to 12BHP if they want to ride a bike, yet if that same 17 year old wants to get behind the wheel of daddy's 300BHP Porsche, there is nothing to stop them legally doing so.

I personally think the driving test should consist of spending a day driving in London, using an old 325 BMW (or other similar heavy, powerful, rear wheel drive car) with absolutely no driving aids (eg, ABS, Traction Control, etc) at all....and if you make it through the day without f**king anybody else (or yourself) up then you've passed.

And then do similar with motorways,not allowed on them until you have taken a seperate test to prove you have the ability/confidence to drive/ride at high speed.Then remove the upper speed limit on motorways. 8-)
