Some may remember i went for an interview last week for a position i saw advertised at a young start up company (2 years old) who just got a big contract with a satellite TV company.

Well they have been in touch and offered me the job 

Trouble is i am not sure i will take it.

In short:

Current Job

Good

• Central London Location

Excellent for food at lunch / shopping
Really like working here, get on with everyone
Very varied role, do a bit of everything
Good work social scene
Chances of moving up ladder as person above me is going travelling at the end of the year

Bad

Chances of loosing my job if they decided to move technical operations to the US, just spoke with a manager though who said they don't want to support it out of hours, so *looks* like operations will still be in Europe

New job

Good

7K more per year than i get currently
Stock options with the company
International Travel within a year highly likely

Bad

Crappy location in Chiswick
Difficult to get to, would have to train, then 8 mile bike rather than 2
3 days working from home after settled in, sounds good in theory, but could be boring after a while.
No work social scene, everyone there are senior developers who are 35+ and have familys
Rubbish for meals and such, just one on site cafe.
Unstable company (young 2 years old), same risk of loosing my job i feel

Think is i really like working in central london and what that offers, also really good friends with a lot of people here, done road trips to Europe with these work mates, always good to go out for a beer afterwards.

I feel it maybe a side step rather than a step up, i need commercial experience so i can be independent of mobile, i have a lot of bespoke skills that are useless outside mobile, so i need management experience, which i could get in 6 months time.

Thanks  I thought so as well.

This is key for me too, at the end of the day 7k sounds a lot but its just 300 a month extra which is nothing major.

I would happily not get that and enjoy working where i am, rather than get the £300 extra and hate where i worked

I had an interview at Chiswick Park some time back and getting there was not a breeze, especially from East London.

The 7K might sound tempting but you will be the 'last one in' there which means working out how far the proportion of 7K will stretch after they discover the recession!

Just trying to give a balancing viewpoint.  I'm in TV and there's not a lot around in my sphere at the moment.

All the best with the decision.  It's certainly a fillip to be offered it.

Cheers, i work in Covent Garden at the moment and its a doddle, hour on the train usually, which a nice film on the laptop

Then 10 min bike ride to the office, just over 2 miles.

Been at my current place for 2 years now, i know all the systems, setup, people.

Plus I doubt the new job would let me play Mario Kart for an hour on top of my lunch break

Ah Yes!  I did 18 months in Poland St.  Used to bask in the summer sunshine in Soho Square for lunchtime.

Scores of pubs and eating places and you get serenaded by the Hare Krishna brigade et al.  You would hate Chiswick by comparison I think.

Seen quite a few people leave here, for 'better' things, more responsiblity & pay only to hate it, leave and now jobless.

Benefit of my current place, i do get paid rather well with no responsbility

Career advancement versus job satisfaction is the age old conundrum Tunnie.

You're young enough to take the knocks should the new venture not work out but it would be a very mature decision should you value what you presently have and decide that it's best to stay.

Money and opportunity can be inconsequential when viewed in the round.  Personal satisfaction in an environment with which you're comfortable may be viewed by many as the preferable option.

That's a conclusion many of us make when we're older, have considered the course of our careers, and have concluded that it's better to have been happy than to have been stressed in a job we felt unhappy with - however trendy, 'happening' or financially rewarding that opportunity was.

When you try to balance all of that against any regret that you might well feel in the future over an opportunity missed, its plain to see that you're in an unenviable position.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Indeed, i drove down and its behind a Honda dealer... and miles from anyware nice.

I think i took all this stuff in London for granted, its like today, at lunch i am going up to Oxford street for a spot of shopping.

I would miss all this on my door step

Personally... Stuff the £7K. It sounds like you'd regret leaving after a very short while! Not only that, is it really going to be worth £7k to have to leave earlier and get home later on the days you're in London :-/ :-/

You could always approach your current boss and ask for a small pay rise to encourage you not to leave and go to the other company... But that can Back fire too

Is there an increase / decrease in travelling cost? Need to factor that in.

Another side of life is to enjoy also..And staying in London can bring other chances..but when you are away its really a different story..You are a young man and lunch times, after the job you need other activities..Thats my opinion..

7K.. believe me an active social life is worth more..

working at home does get tedious - lack of proper interaction.

It certainly has its advantages, for eg, the back end of this week, I ain't going to office, as the pointless "driving in circles fast, as long as I don't have to overtake" event this weekend is already adding significant time to my commute.  Roll on next year, Derbyshire can suffer the disruption
