I personally don't see any gain from inhabiting the moon. The cost incurred must run into billions. Maybe they should try spending it on making our own planet a more pleasant place to live >:( >:( >:( >:(

for the amount of money involved I think they should look at remedying the state of affairs closer to home in the present climate

I can seea sci-fi film coming on! 8-) 8-) 8-)

NASA bomb the moon but miscalculate the affects, with the moon being pushed significantly from its orbit of earth.  This leads to the realisation that the moon will be on a collision course with Earth in 6 months, 2 weeks, 3 days, 5 hours and......counting!!

Hollywood are you interested??  I have the script and are prepared to sell for $10 million ;) ;) ;)

Oh well, that's this mornings fantasy over!! ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;)

Think I have to agree with you on this Cem. There will come a time in the future whereby mankind will need to expand to the stars either through over population or destruction of our own planet. Having a base on the moon will be an ideal platform for launching deep space exploration. It might seem like science fiction but it has to start somewhere.

All right I have had my funny five minutes on this one, but now let's get serious....... ::) ::)

The origins of the USA space programme go back to the late 1950s when it was obvious that the other world super power was going to make a bid for the control of space.  Along came JKF in 1961 with the realization that the United States could not be left behind by the Russians for political, military or reasons.of prestige.  So the race for the moon began, and at the same time the control of space was considered essential for the security of the United States.  As Great Britain had enjoyed the control of the world's oceans for trade, political, military and reasons of prestige to maintain and protect the Empire, so the United States, in 'their Century', as one of the two world superpowers, would control the world through space.

Over the last 50 years the USA has exercised their control through satellites, military communication and missile systems.  Therefore behind any mission to create bases on the moon, behind all the peaceful 'one world' rhetoric, will be the intention by the military advisors at the Pentagon to ensure the US gains a sole advantage of military base(s) on the moon, and indeed eventually elsewhere in space as the human race expands.  That makes the cost of setting up these bases perfectly acceptable and it will be perceived to give the United States yet further political and military power over the earth using very advanced technology that we now probably cannot even imagine.  This will defend the United States from the perceived enemies of the east, and no longer just Russia, although she continues to cause concern to the hawks of the Pentagon.

I suggest that this is what the intended renewed space programme is really about. ;) ;)

I dont want to be sarcastic here,  but remembering the shuttle accidents they are far from building a very far base thinking that thay cant just build a rather rubber nail to keep rockets together  :(

I hear what you are saying Cem, but in fairness you have to say that NASA have made significant steps to improve the performance of the shuttle fleet, with modifications to advance them still going on:

Obviously these machines are becoming life expired, and of course any re-newed lunar mission programme would include a new launch system and vessels. ;) ;)
