Do the conspiracy theorists really expect us to believe that the Americans could do this AND then keep it secret for 40 years ??

Far too many people/agencies involved IMHO

Exactly, tens of thousands minimum, PLUS the Russians!!
Come on all, there was NO conspiracy!! :D :D :D ;)

...or just 3 astronauts and a handfull of the "powers that be". Mission Control did not have any real "control". All they could do is watch, just like the rest of us.

3?!  How about the astronauts of Apollo 12 - 17 (ex 13); NASA personnel; all the external contractors; the (international) scientists, the media, the United States Navy personnel who plucked each Apollo crew from the Ocean, including the near catastrophic Apollo 13 crew, who went via a warehouse (??); etc, etc, oh, and of course the watching unfriendly Russians? ::) ::) ::) ;) ;)

You really think they could all be fooled for 40 years and everyone kept quiet?? ::) ::) ::)

 ;) ;)

Just refering to this "landing".
3 astronauts plus a handfull of others.  Everyone else saw it from earth...the Russians included.
They definately went to the moon, they had to with the Russians watching, but the "landing"...hmm  :-/
Didn't it take place conveniently on the "other side" of the moon ?  ::)

No Turk Apollo 11 placed its astronauts in the highlands of Descartes in the middle south eastern section of the Earth facing side of the moon.  Indeed the following landings by Apollo's 12 to 17, except 13, all landed on the Earth facing side of the Moon, hence the photo's from the Moons surface showing our half 'blue globe' ;) ;)

:o That makes it even more suspicious that we have no visual evidence, especially with all the high powered telescopes around today.

They're gonna have to do better that that. What camers did they use. A Brownie ?

They'll be 31 miles above the surface in August.
Let's hope it all goes to plan and we get irrefutable proof.  :y

Someone may have mentioned this before But

I remember at the time. Being an old git, that there was a Russian space craft hanging about at the time. They must have been tracking it and I'm sure if they hadn't landed, the Russian's would have been happy to let the world know about it.

Also they were tracked by Jodrell Bank and many other ground dishes from differant countries. Why would they lie? ::)

As Neil Armstrong said last night at the Smithsonian Institute, they were way behind in the "Space Race". They desparately needed something big.

I remember hearing, from a good source, that both the US and the Soviets were easily capable of reaching the moon, but unlike the US, the USSR at the time lacked the inertial guidance* technology which was necessary for the landing itself.

Well .....  those who believe in the conspiracy theory won't be persuaded by whatever is posted here.. they'll just remain with heads deeply in the sand .. :(

Forget logic ... it's America .. they must be lieing .... and continuing to lie 40 years on ....... regardless of everything to the contrary.

The rest of us "normal" folks can just remember, and admire, the effort, risk and scientific endeavour that resulted in an amazing journey and some fairly amazing inventions.

My one resounding thought is always .. thank God that "Elf & Safety" had not been invented ... I honestly believe that 99% of all modern inventions would be banned if H&S had existed ....  :(

Yet the USSR had already landed an unmanned craft and obtained lunar samples.

Merely repeating what I'd heard. I think that landing a heavier manned capsule would have required much more technology than an unmanned probe.

But, I agree with Entwood. It is my belief that the lunar landings DID take place and no amount of evidence will persuade those who doubt it.

I think the conspiracy theory (like 9/11) is driven by anti-US emotions, IMHO.  :(

Yep, I reckon so too, just not as early as Armstrong & Co.
(It's not anti-US anyway, it's anti-Bush as far as the truth about 9/11 goes...but let's not go there again :D)

Absolutely right Entwood, inspite of all the facts that you, I and a number of others have highlighted on this thread, you will never change their resolve to deny........because it is the USA involved ::) ::) ::) ::)

Yes, we should now just celebrate a tremendous achievement by the USA and never forget that there were many western international scientists, including British ones,  involved. 8-) 8-) 8-) :y

May we look forward to going again to those new frontiers of space in the near future! ;) ;) ;)
