Breakdown Cover
« on: 20 July 2009, 15:54:15 »

I was wondering who to use, and thought a straw pole may be beneficial. So who uses what, and what bad  experiences have been encountered i.e the ones to avoid.
I was looking at rescuemycar.com, and they seem remarkably cheap, but what is their service like?

With AA on a personal joint policy, mainly becuase I had 3 cars, so car policies were no good.  Never used them though, always towed myself home ;)

Only tow home I ever got was from EuroAssist, which was a short term policy for a holiday. Cannot rate them highly enough, though I know others had trouble with them

I used to work for one of the major breakdown organisations, I left there in February 1999 and I have not had breakdown insurance since. Most of my journeys are short near home, so not a problem if I breakdown. If I do breakdown one day a long way from home then I will use the credit card, even if it costs £500 to get me home it is still cheaper than paying every year for roadside and recovery, remember recovery is down to the breakdown people it is not a right to be taken home. If the car can be fixed in a reasonable time you have to have it fixed.

Also, the local breakdown garage will be more willing to come to me as I am paying up front for a service. (I hope)

Have full AA cover and they have almost 100% proved great.  Only once let down by one of their local agents in Manchester, but AA took over, carried the car and us back home, and gave us compensation of a full years membership! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Had to use RAC once with a company car and they were not very good at all. ;)

I used to work for the AA and always swore by them (even when I didn't work for them).

I use RAC now but only because it comes free with my bank account!  :y

I used to pay for the AA.

Then moved to the RAC with Tesco clubcard points.

now have a lesser cover with my bank account

figure even If I have to pay for further than normal recovery, I will still likely be quids in (in 15 or whatever years, never needed it yet, tocuh wood)

We had RAC cover on the vans when I used to do a real job, they were truely awful - worse was when I got a puncture around 5:30pm (we weren't allowed to change wheels on our transits), they turned up just gone midnight!

I wouldn't have it at all, just bite the bullet when it happened, but Mrs TheBoy likes the peace of mind - last time she broke down (technically the car would still have driven her home) was when HG failed, and she had to walk home. I was stuck in London until 8pm

I should add, that was 15 yrs ago, so unfair to judge them on the bad experiences I had then!

I use green flag -through tesco's own brand ,i save up the money off coupons and this year will get nearly £ 30 off the total of £ 79. saved my bacon last year when the turbo blew on my Galaxy( that was really impressive ,proper F1 style!)took me from Edinburgh to newcastle at 11.30 at night, never been so pleased to see a tow truck!would have cost over £400 otherwise, took me the mrs and the 4 kids home no bother, took about 40 mins to turn up .i would reccomend  them

With the AA....£18.29 a month for the full beans breakdown cover and their fantastic parts and labour policy too.....total protection.....

Head gasket went last June on our previous Omega, they came, diagnosed the fault, relayed me home then took the car straight to my garage, then paid the bill when the work was done.....

What more do you need than that.....???!?!?!?

I get european breakdown cover for 30 quid a year on a car I screwed together myself. Cost about 4 times as much for Uk cover on the Omega + MX5 so they've just been binned.

Free cover for 2 weeks at a Total garage every time you fill up with 30 litres (not hard to use 30l of LPG in 2 weeks). No idea if it's any good.

Thats the deal I have Bertie. Well worth it when you get other stuff like travel insurance, mobile phone insurance, extended warranty on household stuff all thrown in as well.  :y
