MOT - exhaust
« on: 25 July 2009, 15:27:51 »

I have just been getting the old girl ready fo rher MOT on monday and having not driven her for a while I had to get the jumper cables out, etc.  I noticed that there is a small but noticable blow around the center box area, I can hear it but not been under to find it yet.

Will this cause a fail?

If you can hear it without getting under the car I would imagine it will fail.

I can hear my exhaust blow; from inside the house (with the door shut).....it`s stopped sounding 'sporty' now and has become annoying. :'(

Found the hole and plugged it with marine epoxy filler.  The exhaust will rot around that part of the box now but that bit will stay!  :y

The tester will check the system from the cylinder head, right through to the tailpipe.
If the system is not "gas tight" between those two points, then it will fail (if the tester is playing with a straight bat).

A couple of years ago I had a back box pass with a blackened hole the size of a fifty pence.  The tester told me he couldn’t fail it because it passed the emission test and was no noisier than normal.

He did fail the car on handbrake (off by 1-2%) but I sorted both for the retest.

Well it's sorted now, and I have gone through the checklist.  The only thing it can go on now is emissions but seeings as she was super healthy last year I am not that worried (fingers crossed though)  :y

Thanks for your advice :y

Note: A minor exhaust leak from, for example, a connection joint or a pin hole, is not a Reason for Rejection
