Road tax question on a car I'm buying
« on: 04 March 2007, 12:17:12 »

I'm going to pick up a car on Tuesday that I've bought on ebay. The auction states that the car has MOT until Feb 2008, and is taxed until July 2007.

The woman who's selling the car seems really genuine. However, I've just checked the tax on the DVLA website, and it's coming up with the date of liability as 01 01 2007.

Is it likely that the DVLA site is just wrong? I thought these things were normally pretty accurate. If I get there and the tax disc looks legit with the post office stamp on it, am I going to be ok?

I would get a full receipt with the date and time of collection just to be on the safe side.

The DVLA site does take a little while to update, especially if the car was taxed at a post office because it has to wait until the returns come back from the PO. It should be there by now though.

Just be vigilant and look for any signs oif a forged tax disc. If they can produce a reciept for it so much the better.

I know I'm probably worrying over nothing, but it is best to check these things.

I don't fancy driving around for the next 4 months with no tax!  :-/

The update from the PO is now virtually straight away, thanks to barcode scanning etc.  Its no longer the case that DVLA have to wait until the Tax Disc Book stubs get to Swansea.  Could be the seller is disabled and the disc is therefore at the disabled (zero) rate. 01/01/07 would be the expiry date of the last paying disc?  If a genuine disabled rate disc, you would need to change and pay for the due rate as of date of your purchase.

However, I would be guessing at an iffy tax disc.

Verify the silver bar strip across the centre.
Look for the two oval punched holes - should be crisp and sharp and not done with a craft knife....
Check that the back of the disc is also printed - some peeps only scan the front....
Ensure there are punched holes around the edge of the disc and not scissor cut.
If it looks and feels greasy, could be that an ink disolver has been applied and the writing is now unreadable

Its not the running about without tax thats the problem, its the fraudulent display that p*sses peeps of when they are knicked....

Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure I check all those things.  :y

Is there a possibility that the DVLA website is wrong?

In theory, it could have been taxed late february which would give an expiry date of july 07 as stated.
The checks posted in this thread are good; I suggest taking a genuine purple disc to compare against; if it's a forgery, it'll stand out a mile.  Check carefully where the reg is printed or written in.  The simplest way that people try to pass a car as taxed is to nick a genuine one from a car (hand car washes a real favourite) and then alter the details.

Check the VIN against the V5 and check the VIN in at least two places in the car.  Again, cloned cars get sold with wrong reg plates attached; give away is the tax disc if they display one.

Of course, it's more likely that they've sent the disc for refund but then if has to be notified off road!!!

i would email/contact dvla to see whether the disc has been cancelled ie bounced cheque etc. they will get back to you within a couple of days.

It did take a couple of weeks for my car to change status when taxed but it also changed owner at the same time. Maybe that slowed it down. It's unlikely that it would ever take 2 months though!

I phoned the girl up that's selling the car and she said that she's only just taxed it. She had to backdate it too, as it was untaxed for a month apparently.

She sounds pretty genuine and I'm sure it'll easy to spot a dodgy one. Well... I hope so anyway....

What was wrong with that one?

Mine seems ok to be honest. There's a slight fault with the alternator at high revs which seems to make it undercharge slightly. Guess it must be on it's way out.

The only part I wanted to change was the waterpump for a metal one, but no-one seems to make them anymore. Shame.

Omega's going in the auto trader on Sunday.
