CCTv. composite video output to VGA monitor?
« on: 05 November 2009, 18:43:22 »

`Having a few security 'issues', so setting up a cheapo CCD camera (which surprisingly works brilliantly in the dark) to view the farmyard.
The camera outputs as a (simple) composite video signal via an RCA 'phono' skt.

I don`t really want to tie the CCTv., to the sitting-room telly, but I do have an (old) spare LCD monitor which only has a VGA input; I know the VGA input is an R.G.B arrangement: but, might it possible to connect the two (with appropriate rewiring of the VGA plug)? :-/

Nope, VGA leads do not except composite feeds, they require RGB + Hsync and V sync

You can get bits of kit that will convert though.

No composite video input on the standard VGA input, cheapest option would probably to obtain the cheapest TV you can find on Ebay with CV or SCART connector.

Shame really as our CCTV function recently disposed of 40 CCTV monitors  ::) :'(
They are supposed to be swapping the remainder out but think the budget has been cut, if they do i'll grab a couple.

If you're looking for a cheap monitor I've just bought one of these : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250507202442

20 quid. Absolutely brand new and boxed.:y

I thought the CRT looked colour on the picture and sure enough it is. :o

The seller has some more monitors at the moment (none exactly the same).

If you want to feed a VGA monitor bear in mind that the TV scan rate is much slower than any VGA device so any converter may have to up the scan rate. At that point it's probably better to get a cheap TV.

or.. get a video capture card for your PC and have the added advantage that you can record to hard drive.

Just buy a secondhand 14" colour portable TV from a boot sale.

The claim from the Maplin site that there will be no deterioration during the conversion process is absolute crap, although that will be a moot point in law if the video footage itself isn't digitally watermarked and you need to use it in a court of law.

There are however plenty of ways to discourage people from pissing you off, ranging from self defence (legal in some instances apparently), to full on "I don't give a crap and you will be eating through a drip for the next 6 months if you piss on my camp fire".

Apparently the latter option is illegal and can get you in trouble, but that only happens if the so called victim turns up to court and gives evidence against you.

Hi Debs, as an experience I'll recommend 2 things..

if you want to see the faces clearly go for 550 TVL or higher cameras..

and also spots connected to a motion detection sensor (they are sold ready so no work required)  will be very helpful to identify.. :y

Thanks chaps! :y

I`ll have a mooch about at the local waste-reclamation site tomorrow and see if I can find an old CRT portable.....the Maplin adapter is a tad overbudget for me at the mo. ;)

The nocturnal "goings`on" here have got me worried and the Police seem 'too busy' (and far-away) to be bothered helpful with rural-crime concerns.

Point of law question: If I were physically threatened by nocturnal (farmyard) intruders, what would be considered 'reasonable force': as is said to be used in self-defence of personage or property?......could I (deliberately) set the dogs on them?......or perhaps, 'rock-salt' them with the '.410'?

imho they can be dangerous even for dogs..

keep a gun handy, and if necessary first shoot in air , second in their arse ;D :y

seriously shot at the lower legs in case of danger is legal here..not sure for there though :-/

Quite a few circumstances are used to dictate "reasonable force" in law Debs.

As an example, my other half is quite high up the TKD ladder...so anyhing more than a punch or kick from her could be considered unreasonable.

However someone like myself who has no official training and is also registered nuts.....it's quite possible for me to do much more damage than the old lady could and still get away with it.

It's interpretation at the end of the day, and they can only interpret from the facts that YOU tell them.......

In other words, tell them you were a lone female, you were scared for your life, and let the CPS do the proving.
