...furthermore bj I would have considered your standing to be above this base - almost tribal - gloating. :( :(

i'm rarely above base, tribal gloating  ;D ;D ;D - but i seriously doubt you'd accuse me of that if i was slagging Brown rather than Thatcher, isn't it just that you can't see past your deification of the old hag?  8-)

seriously tho, there will be a party when the dragon snuffs it - i still don't think most folk down south appreciate what a hate figure she was - witness the Glasgow NE by-election last night - tory vote was up 5% as the last election they didn't even bother with a candidate and only just got the deposit back by a handful of votes this time - now thats some legacy - 20yrs on her party is still so hated that large areas of scotland you've more chance of seeing Elvis riding a unicorn than seeing a tory  ;D

Aah the unsavoury and short-sighted tribalism rearing its ugly head once more - I know it only too well - it's much in evidence where I'm working at the moment and it has stood them in very good stead ::) ::)

Still it's better sticking with the known quantity - however unsatisfactory - than be imaginative and look for an alternative.

New (and not so new) Labour, rather like the parties here, depends on such apathy, prejudice and fear to survive and prosper. :(

20yrs on her party is still so hated that large areas of scotland

...that's certainly nothing to be proud of bj :( - anyone will do as long as it's not them, to the point of supporting a party which after 12 years in power has decimated this country, led us into two wars of questionable legality, reigned over financial chaos and has presided over a social breakdown that would be quite amusing if it were not so serious.

Still this is how power is retained - look after your own (not in the racial sense) and promise them the world.

...if you believe that I would deify any mortal you would be quite wrong bj I was quite well aware of her short-comings - after all she eventually succumbed to them.

I read elsewhere a comment that if you put a red rosette on a donkey, the Scots would vote for it.

Just saying what I read, that's all.  ;) ;D

I remember it well Zulu..........Unceremoniously.....booted out by her own party in 1990.......after eleven glorious years. ::) ::)
One good  thing I will say about Thatcher though....she believed in a meritocracy.......and as a mere grammar school girl (her father was a grocer)...had little time for the inept buffoons .....being produced by the public school system...... ::) ;).....especially Eton..... ::) ::) ;)
If David Cameron becomes PM.......he will be the first public school educated Tory PM since Alec Douglas Home in 1964.....A backward step in my opinion. :-/ :-/
In order to form ......the next government.....the Conservative party will need to be able to empathise (or is that empathize?.)with the hopes and fears of the British people.
A gaggle of .....below average intelligence.......public schoolboys .....with wealthy pompous parents is not the way to achieve this..... :y :y :y

...I don't entirely disagree with you Opti as I'm far from convinced that the Tory front bench have the collective stones or imagination to govern effectively in what will prove to be some very difficult times to come.

The theory and dogma of the accepted political line must eventually give way to practical understanding of how the chosen policy affects the electorate on a day to day basis.

Nation - in the collective and not the jingoistic sense - has to come before party and personality.

Agreed Zulu.....as said before ....I'am apolitical.....and will go with the political party .....that offers "the best deal"........It could even be the Conservatives... ::) ::) ;)
