Nothing wrong with water on a (12 volt ) electrical fire.

Fair do's i was always told that never to use water, but foam related extinguishers on any electrical fire no matter how small.

But in the heat of the moment, with the car so close to the house, i think i would have done the same.

Where they original batteries or replacements?

dont appear to be replaceable on this, filled with gell, look to be 2x AA or AAA size

Lets be fair....When they were new at £30000 or whatever....I would have been glad of a powersounder in the alarm...

Wow Ljay, that was too close a call!!

Very glad no one was hurt .  Certainly a lesson for all of us on checking / replacing the power sounder!

What an episode!


So yes...sat watching starwars when we hear the strangled yelp of a car screaming for help.

Open and start it to try and turn off the alarm.....then see the smoke.

pop the bonnet....lots of smoke, and some little flames....SHIIIIIIITE

Ljay ran in to keep the kids out the way, and call the fire dept out.

I scratch my head for 10 seconds, and grabbed the hose and managed to put it out & Disconnect the battery.

Had the scuttle off by the time the fire crew arrived who checked it was out, and did a little report.

I finished dismantling it all, and made the wires safe, not winning dismantling the sounder....all sealed....any clues?

As has been said, lucky we were there to sort it!

So my advice to you all....is disconnect those sounders, I personally don't want something that can go up in flames like that connected to the car!  There is enough neccessary things, without a dodgy alarm siren.

It's supposed to be replaced as a unit. There are a few people who say they've got it apart and replaced the batteries but that one looks too far gone. Like I said earlier, one security measure too far.

Your only problem, as far as I can see, is that there's a gaping hole where it should be. Could cause problems in the case of an insurance claim. You could get one off a a scrapper I suppose, but I wouldn't bother wiring it in.

After being annoyed by the incessant beeping with my two omegas, I just disconnected them and forgot them.

i think someone would have to really know their stuff to look for a power sounder on the Omega, if you have a smash, are they really going to try and get the scuttle off to check its there?  :-/

If its nicked, you won't be getting it back anyway. Removal is the best option IMO.

Omegas are worthless and no one wants to steal them, if scumbag wants to get to his crack house, he will steal a 1995 Fiesta, much easier.

If a second scumbag wants to steal to sell on, no way will he pick an Omega, he will go next door for that BMW.

I think you'll find that the word "small" applies to the size of the flames, not the voltage feeding it.

As Kev says, throw any oxygen retardant you like at a 12/24V fire....just think twice when it involves 230V.

Cut off the lead for the sounder at the base of the loom, seal with black insulating tape. No one will notice, if you have a front or rear end smash they are not going to be interested in the alarm.

First thing the fire brigade do is spray all the electrical supplies in water when attending a factory type fire, easiest way of making the building electrically safe.

That is of course if our fire attenders even bother to fight the fire. I call them fire attenders as around here that is what they do I am afraid, just sit and watch it burn, useless lot.
