A GIFT TO 4X4 OWNERS
« on: 09 January 2010, 17:07:48 »

All the current pressure on 4x4 owners to get rid of there gas guzzlers may backfire due to the current weather conditions. If I owned one it would be the ideal opportunity to stick two fingers up to the green lobby. The totally inadequate attempt by councils up and down the country to improve road safety by gritting has brought four wheel drive into a league of it's own, and the fact that some 4x4 drivers are actually being praised for using there vehicals to help out communitys with anything from recovery stranded cars to delivering meals on wheels to elderly people.  If I owned I would certainly think twice about getting rid of it now.

As much as I usually slag off 4x4 drivers that are not using them for professional needs, I must say Tony you are right that they have come into their own over recent weeks! :y :y

Come the spring though it will all be forgotton, and the anti-4x4 stance will continue..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

Must confess... I am missing the Rangie at the moment :( :(

Around here the 4x4 club is always on standby... they're currently helping Doctors/Paramedics get about plus on call with the Police to clear hills :y :y :y

I've used mine as much as possible to tow people etc. I've a friend in Thames Valley Police, so have been helping the odd police vehicle if it's gotten stuck, also gave south central ambulance a call to give them my number and told them if they're stuck to give me a ring if the ambulance is near. Pulled a Sprinter 316 ambulance out of a small untreated road. There's nothing I can do in these weather conditons so may aswell do something useful rather than just sit at home.
I must admit though, meeting new people never does any harm to my business, selling cars. The ambulance crew took a business card, already had a call from one of their partners looking for a car  :y

I have thought about getting a 4x4 on many occasions, mainly for towing the caravan. I can't really justify owning one though as I don't camp in muddy fields or wish to go off road. And how often do we get extreme weather condition like now, well enough to justify a 4x4 down our way.
The estate does the job well.
Good on all the 4x4 brigade for helping out.  Agreed they will be under fire again and taxed heavily again as soon as all gets back to normal.

we have a stealth 4x4 - its a 2000 model ford galaxy but it was one of a very few that had the 4 wheel drivetrain set up, it looks no different to a standard galaxy and you get 7 seats.

I carry a towing strap, shovel and a bag of grit in the back and have stopped to help a few people over the past few days.  What I have noticed though is that some people I have stopped to help have been really rude - no smiling, no thanks and some have just driven off when you unhook them just staring at you like it was your fault they were stuck in the first place.

There aren't many but the ones we do have tend to be either quite steep or long and gentle ::) ::)

Problem is that you won't need one again for the next 30 years till the next bad winter!

I am thinking of getting a UK one IF/WHEN my Omega fails its MOT next week. They are all going for daft money now .

Went out to help a lass push off an Astra this aft from being stuck in a small drift outside the front of my house.
Big fat git driving it, two big fat lasses in the car and none of them got out to help push their own car.
I said to the big fat git to put it in third and go easy on the clutch- he listened the third time - and me and this other lass managed to push it off and of he went with a cheery pip pip on his horn, windows down and all three occupants waving out the windows!

I turned to this other lass and said that I don't believe it (in a Victor Meldrew stylee) and she said that she's stopped to help and was going to tow them out with her Suzuki Jimny, but aparently, the big fat git just said "No ta" and sat there spinning the wheels in 1st and reverse gears until I got there. The lass (that had stopped), had got a shovel from her Suzy and was trying t clear the snow from the front wheels of the Astra - again, no help form the occupants.

Some people...............

In my experiece 4x4 drivers below the age of 50 have been obnoxious pratts that only have those vehicles because they are big and the only time they remotely need a 4x4 is to tow their jet ski etc.
There are two that will just stop, one either side of the road and have a chat whilst cars queue to pass single file between them.
Often see one Muscle Mary park his Chelsea Tractor on the No Parking area directly outside the entrance of our local Tesco and go shopping.
Three times in the last week I've seen 4x4's crossing a solid white line whilst overtaking a vehicle, that wasn't hanging about itself.
Obviously this is only my personal opinion, and I am well aware there are some that genuinely need a 4x4, but to the majority around here that "may" need a 4x4 a few days a year I say learn to drive properly.

There should be an exemption for those that can prove they need them, and as for the school run and Muscle Mary brigade, they should be hammered with a tax.
