Duvets - Tog Rating
« on: 15 January 2010, 17:31:19 »

Treated myself to a 13.5 tog cheap Duvet from Asda.  Nice and lightweight, but makes me sweat like I am in a Sauna, thought it was because it had like a plastic coating on the material.

Then decided to buy a Duck/Down Devet, also 13.5 Tog, and still feel like I am in a Sauna.

Obviously prefer the quality of the more exspensive one, also love the added weight.

So my question is this, what difference is there between each of the 0.5 tog ratings for me to know which one I might want.

I am happy to buy a 10 or even 12 tog or even both, but then storage becomes a problem.

TIA.   :y

13 way too hot for us normally....

we have a 4.5 for summer
a 10 for spring / autumn / winter
and a 13.5 for ultra cold / emergencies

used to prefer down ones, but find them too heavy, prefer hollow fibre now...(but a good down pillow)

Cheers JB,   Might try a 12 tog in that case.

think you will notice very little difference between 12 and 13.5....

I would drop a little further.

just remembered...you can get a set comprising of 9 and 4.5.....and they clip together

so you have 4.5, 9 or 13.5 with one 'set'

Just been reading about them.

Think I will try a 10 tog then.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tog_(unit)

A tog is 0.1 m2K/W. In other words, the thermal resistance in togs is equal to ten times the temperature difference (in °C) between the two surfaces of a material, when the flow of heat is equal to one watt per square metre.

According to British retailer John Lewis, tog guidelines for duvets are as follows:[1]
Lightweight summer duvet:       4.5 tog
Spring/Autumn weight duvet:       9.0 - 10.5 tog
Winter weight duvet:       12.0 - 13.5 tog
