My computer crashed a few weeks ago,and the one I  replaced it with wont shut down the cooling fan. Is this correct? It is a HP laptop 6910p, used but refurbished, it may be a daft question but I know very little about computers so any help would be appreciated.

You replaced a PC just cause it crashed  :o :o

When is this cooling fan staying on? During normal use or when you have shut it down?

My first thoughts are your putting it in standby, and not shutting it down fully. - Hence cooling fan staying on.

What are you actually doing when powering off? Just closing the lid?

Keep up Tunnie, reply 3

Hello all, thanks for all this very good advice. It would appear my worst fears are being realised which came on unpacking the laptop on delivery by parcel post on xmas eve day.1st thing noticed was several loose screws underneath(one was hanging in by as little as 1 thread I felt it sticking out) Then I noticed the 4 rubber stand pads were missing from underneath,as I've already said the power lead is badly damaged, Its lucky I discovered this, please read my previous post.To answer your queries I do have an invoice showing payment on the 17th of this month. It is supposed to be a refurbished machine and still carries a years HP warranty.I am reluctant to make my supplier public until they have a chance to put things right, thanks again for all your interest and valued comment, this forums a great place to be. I can now argue from knowledge instead of ignorence,I will be phoneing them on Tues and will post up on how I get on. :y :y :y :y

Well if that is the standard of what they call a refund then I would respectfully ask for a refund.

Nice one.  I would top the funds up and buy a new one though.

As cem says, Toshiba have allways be ok.

What ever you decide to buy, put the brand and model number in google and add the word problems or issues after it.

Tis a quick way to find out any common faults or issues.

Thanks Cem, I'll check out Toshiba.Scruntie thats a clever use of a search engine, same as what Ken told me to do to query the Nvidia GPU,I now realise. I'll manage a little longer with this slow 8 yr old standby laptop and let the cash build up. So long as Miggy does'nt come up with any surprises.Regards,Cliff. :y

Hello there, All you helpfull folks, just to let you know how my final laptop needs got sorted. I searched and tried like mad to get a Toshiba with a managed recovery partition on the hard disc like my old H.P.and other technical aspects for the price I was prepared to pay,and of course with approval from SWMBO.I finally settled for another H.P this time new from the U.S.A. which took 3 days to arrive at my address. Wow what service :oI am now useing it and in my not so competant hands its a dream to use. Its got a core 2 duo processor 2.2 ghz speed on each core, the decktop label reads" Windows 7 Home Premium(64bit)simplifies everyday tasks" bet it can't help me type any faster :-[ :( Never mind I found it quiet a learning experience finding out the basic technicals after  talking to you guys on the Forum, and then from that of course knowing where to look.
The model No reads"dv6-1354us Entertainment Notebook. For the present I'm well pleased, no doubt on the law of "swings and roundabouts"nothing is ever perfect, just have to wait and see ::)There it is thought I'd let you know how I went on and thanks once more to you all :y :y :y
