Calling all Camcorder Experts
« on: 24 January 2010, 18:31:10 »

I've been given a Cannon MV500i camcorder, with no cables, except the charging cable.

It's got a DV 4 pin socket.

Question:- Can I buy a DV 4 pin firewire cable to USB socket to download movies onto my PC?

I've done a Google, and it doesn't seem straightforward, or am I looking for compications?

Would've thought you'd need the software?

No B, just firewire for the camcorder. I've got a PCI firewire card here you can have if you want ;) :y

USB sucks more cock than Peter Tatchell where video capture is concerned.

As your camcorder has firewire output, simply buy yourself a firewire card and install the capturing software of your choice.

PS

I would make an offer of providing just about any software you like to "try before you buy" where the capturing/editing is concerned, but I won't do that as it is apparently against the rules  ;)

It's for the PC, which doesn't have a slot.

My Sony camcorder can be connected to the PC via USB, but I don't know why, as you can't capture the movies unless you use firewire.  I'm not sure where the restriction is - PC software supplied perhaps?  Or is it the camera itself?

Anyway, connecting up via firewire (once I'd spent 6 months looking for the cable I knew I'd bought when I bought the card) was dead easy and worked a treat.

Pity I can't get Windows Moviemaker to work. :)

Are you trying to plug the camcorder into your desktop or laptop??

If desktop, you will need to take it apart and add a card, which wellung has offered  :y
