Agreed, thats been the story of Sky boxes from day one.

Any they consume so much power and run so bloody hot.

Yep. Take my standard Grundig SD set top box.

Power consumption when on: 20 watts
Power consumption standby:  20 watts

Hate to think what an HD / Sky + box is like.

.. and they've now added a timeout so that it goes into standby if you forget and leave it on. Why, exactly? ;D

It's a good job Murdoch controls the media because if the nut munchers found out about it... ;D

Might wait for the contract to runout and then take them up onthe thier offer of a free Sky HD box (New and Existing Customers)  will just have to check the small print to find out where I get ripped off.

Whos manufacturing them....

*waits for rants from TB....

Sony  ::)
Sony themselves, or are they subcontracting to a chinese sweatshop?

Don't know, knowing them sub contracted, to sub contractors, who sub contract it  ::)

Design of the box this time is Sky's own, and 'apparently' its very different to the previous HD boxes

In Sky's defense the new 1TB box is first one actually made by Sky internally, all previous boxes have been outsourced to other companies, and due to the crapness and complains they are bringing box builds in-house, if they actually improve or not is another matter  :-/

How's that workt hen if Sony are making them abroad..... ::)

If it needs to wake up on timer record then they have to use chips with power-saving circuitry as you will doubtless know.  Plenty of options around but it requires a re-design of the hardware from the ground up.

Simplest option would be a battery-backed chip that can switch on the PSU to wake up the rest of the machine.  That has been available for more than a two decades I would guess, but the will to do it is only just appearing.

Funnily enough, mobile devices have been doing it with avid eagerness for yonks now.  Perhaps it's pursuit of the bottom-line (for the manufacturers, not the user) that drives this?
