When I was a very small girl, aged about 5-6 my grandparents ran a workingmens club in Barry, and I used to walk past the scrapyard everyday in the holidays and see all the trains waiting for the cutters torch. :'( :'( :'( :'(

My ex and I visited as well on a number of occasions.  We often viewed certain loco's that our societies / Mid-Hants Railway, who we were members of, planned to purchase.  Very interesting days 8-) 8-) 8-)

The pleasing end to that story is that over 213 loco's in Dia Wooham's were saved and the preservation societies and railways have put over 60% (last I heard) back into operation :-* :-* :-*

Yep Diane, and that is what Deltic 55015 Tulyar did (twice!!)to me on a wet November day in 1981, standing on Eastleigh Station platform in the pouring rain as first it powered a train load of enthusiasts on a "farewell to the Deltic Special" through on the fast down track at 85-90 mph with horn blaring!! :-* :-*

It was the first occasion a Deltic had been on BR Southern Region metals, and it returned later in the day to stop in the station and reverse into Eastleigh MPD.  What a day that was!  Wet, cold, but thrilled at that sound:-* :-* :-*

I think the car die hards on this car forum may have something to say on that!! :o :o

 They just about tolerate us now ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What I do though is just slip in the mention of 'pistons; and 'cylinders', along with wheels and they do not always notice I'm on about steam railway engines!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

A great line there Mudflap!! :-* :-* :y :y

I was lucky enough to first travel on that section of line in 1960, travelling on the Torbay Express from Paddington, pulled by a Castle class locomotive.  Next time it was a Grange class that pulled us into Kingswear.

The last time I went on the Torbay Express from Kingswear to Paddington in 1962 it was by then pulled by Warship class deisel locomotive Strongbow  8-) 8-) 8-)

In between the Expresses I travelled locally, with mum, behind 0-6-0 pannier tanks and rail cars on that line.

Happy memories!!  :-* :-* :-*
