This area was awash with 37s on the coal traffic.

And until a few years back, we had a few stabled at Rhymney hauling 4-coach rakes on peak-hour workings. I even had two top'n'tailed 37s on the Treherbert line once, due to a Pacer/Sprinter shortage - pain in the neck though on intensive Valleys services.

Bit of a '47' bloke meself though :y

Me to.....

Yes, the valleys had plenty of 37's!
you should go to Inverness there's somtimes a double header 47's sleeper thats leaves at 20:30 every night and its some thrash up the hill notch X required  ;) :y
some real sulzer thrash none of that english electric all noise no action crap ;D ;D

Thats what we like to hear.....2600bhp of Sulzer 12 cylinder 12LDA28-C....

I am just sorry I cannot get the same feeling for steam as I can get from a Class 37. Before my time, I suppose.
I did once see a Stanier Black 5 in Merthyr Station about 8 years ago, I was well impressed with that, and there were about 1000 people there to see it, just amazing.

I just love engineering, although, to me, diesel are much more technicaly interesting.

Beware though.....preserved diesels do not have an infinite life, they wil only last so long and unlike steam you cant easily make the bits to fix them.

So make the most of them whilst you can.

Now, that is something I must go see.
In fact, is the Railway Museum at York still open? Or re-opened? as last time I looked it was closed for some refurb or summat
May take a sat trip there.

Wanna see some diesels in action?

As part of the 'GWR 175' celebrations, the West Somerset Railway is staging it's 'Diesels in the West' event on Friday to Sunday 11-13 June.

Might take the caravan down to Blue Anchor for this .... :y

What has happened to all the slam door carriages?
Gone to the great railway in the sky no doubt.

Up until November of last year at least Bombardier of Chart Leacon, down here in Ashford, had a full unit set of slam door carriages sitting in their yard 8-) 8-).  May still be there for all I know! ;) ;)

If it's on the erstwhile Swansea Vale Railway, I could have saved you the trip.

That line has closed down due to imminent redevelopment of the area.
I'm told that (at least) some of the rolling stock has gone west to the fledgling Gwendraeth Valley line near Llanelli.

We've still got a Class 121 'bubble car' which operates on the Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay shuttles. (When it's actually 'in service' that is).

A right pain to work, with a useless heating system too.

Saying that, I do enjoy the sound of that Leyland 0.680 with SCG gearbox!
