An Engine Without Oil....
« on: 08 April 2007, 10:19:47 »

How long can i leave an engine with no oil in it.

Its that Vectra...removed sump / filter etc etc to drain the oil out ( the good news is its just good blackk used oil with no contamination)

I've now come inside to get "work ready"  >:( and run out of time replacing sump / filter etc and therefore not filled its new oil.

Now The car is garaged and wont be started obviously... ( not even got a battery in it)

Can the second part of the job wait til next weekend....or should i be doing it at 11pm tonight  :-/Can siezed engines and oil starvation effects happen THAT quick?

When was the engine last run?  If it was ages ago, outside chance of a problem but if ran recently (last week or two) should be OK as long as the garage is dry.  If theres any trace of damp then it will find a dry bit and create surface rust.

If its going to be overhauled anyway, then all should be sound..

last ran errrrrrr 4 months ago.

Oil cooler failure etc etc stopped it. Having service etc by me now oil cooler / radiator / water pump / thermostat/ hoses are replaced.

Garage is a real warm dry one  :y

I remember many years ago (late 70's) working in a garage as an apprentice motor mechanic, fresh out of school, trying to fathom what these strange knocking noises were coming from the engine of a car I had just serviced. It took a while before someone asked the obvious question "Did you remember to re-fill the engine with oil"

Oh Dear! :-[ :-[
