You have to be REALLY careful with the prostrate decision and your GP should explain very clearly that any tests indeed may show prostrate issues BUT the time for the prostrate to develop to a threatening level maybe a a very long time and may not be an issue before you die a natural death.
I was a little reluctant to post this on a non medical forum but there are many psychological issues to be associated with any decision as to how to proceed with the prostrate testing and the outcomes thereof.
My neighbour is suffering more with the aftermath of prostrate treatment than anything else - he was fine before.
Please ensure you get the full info from GP before you decide on how to deal with this. Bottom line is - yes it may be detected but it may not get to a level to damage your health for a long long time.
If you are getting on a bit and have no symptoms just be careful.
Thanks for the concern and advice.

However, I have every confidence in the doctor I'm under at the moment and she has fully explained the potential pitfalls associated with prostate problems and associated tests as well as giving me lots of fact sheets to read. I've also trawled through a few medical sites and read up on the subject. At the moment I'm having blood tests for potentially high cancer causing PSA levels which was fairly high on the first test. She has aslo examined the prostate (the old finger in the bum test

) and found it to be slightly enlarged. Next step is an ultrasound scan on the urinary tract and another blood test. In the meantime she's put me on tablets that help relieve the symptoms which are definitely helping.

The next stage after that (if there are major concerns) would be a prostate biopsy and this is where things can get a bit nasty as the procedure has its own dangers.
Blimey, this IS becoming a bit of a medical thread!
