computer help

swmbo's computer will not boot up
the cpu and psu fans run very slowly for about 5 seconds then stop, there are no beeps have disconected all drives and cards still the same
but if i take the 4 pin plug out off the motherboard which i think ssaid cpu on it both fans are back up to normal speed
any ideas

check the power on switch connection ..

well i have got it down to either motherboard or cpu
as i took the motherboard out with cpu and put it in a known working case and it is still the same :(

Look in the BIOS and see if there are any protections for cpu fan not spinning.

does not run long enough
does not do anything really
no beeps or anything
only thing i did notice in the original case
when i push the power switch it lights up red
it used to light up blue
if its any help its a Packard Bell

Have you cleaned all the dust out of the heatsink and fan, and put now heat sink paste on if you have had the CPU out.

Just sounds like the CPU is getting hot and shutting down/restting the computer.

Just a thought.

yes have cleaned all the dust out
have not removed heatsink or cpu
as said if i remove the little four pin plug from near the cpu both fans run normally and the computer does not switch off but still does not beep to say there is a problem nor does it boot up

remove the memory sticks, reconnect the 4 pin power .. try it .. should beep for no memory error...  if it doesn't my guess is the MB has had it  .... I have a couple of MB testers that plug in to PCI slots .. but they are not cheap ...

Sounds like something (short circuit?) is dragging down the output of the power supply to me. Does any component on the motherboard get hot after a few attempts to switch on?
