Windows 7, servers, icons, and missing the point

Windows 7, been playing a bit, quite like it.

except for some server type applications...

I can install the software, no probs....
but having it autorun, can put it in startup, fine, except you get a security prompt on every boot to allow it to run.  I know I can globally disable this.....but don't want to at the moment....

or I can install it as a service, no prompts, but services now can't interface with the desktop, so no icon in the tray  :'(

I must be missing the point  ;D

£1 to 1p I'm missing the obvious  ;D  probably just need to run more uptodate software  ;D

A server app should, really by definition, run as a service.  If it needs a tray icon, they this should be a seperate user mode process that interogates the service.

Software is free, but also unsupported for personal use, so won't get a lot of joy there  ;D

it is win 7 approved, they have a new beta version, may play with that.

Fogive me as I know nothing about computers but there was a something on the radio this morning about windows XP and Mcafee, don't ask me what because the news reader was speaking in Swahili ::)

lol mcafee (again) sent out an update which made it think windows itself was a virus so sent it into a constant reboot loop  ;D

Yeah, McAfee dropped a bollock, and their latest definition file claimed a valid XP SP3 system file was a virus, and stopped it booting.

Good to see these companies do thorough testing. Not!

On my netbook I have an XP and McAfee combination and last night there was a pop up for an important update - assume that was the fix??

Windows 7 Manager (by Yamicsoft) will let you specify individual applications that can automatically run with elevated priveleges.

A one year license costs $39.95, although I can't see many people paying that when the algorithm used to generate a valid serial number is so easy to break.
