Anaphylactic shock is no fun
« on: 06 May 2010, 22:50:45 »

Went and vote at 1230, came back home, took the first tablet in a course of penecillin and then started to put my new karcher together.
After about 20 minutes I started to feel peculiar (or even moreso then usual) ::) feeling itchy everywhere, hot, all my skin was red as a strawberry and it seemed difficult to take a deep breath. i called Mrs Albs from upstairs and by the time she got down I was lying on the sofa and didnt have the energy to sit up.
She dialled 999 - the first time in her life -and within 5 minutes a first responder turned up, I could hardly draw any breath in by then so he put an oxygen mask on me.
About 10 minutes later a Paramedic turned up and took over, checked blood pressure -low, Heartbeat - fast. carried on with oxygen and gave me an injection in my bum :o....he had a syringe ready (adrenalin I think)in case he needed it before the ambulance got there.
When they lifted me to put me in the wheelchair to go in the ambulance the effort was too much and I drifted into unconsciousness. was brought round on the way to hospital, and then given loads of oxygen aand injections and drip and stuff when I got to Resuss.
After a couple of hours of drifting in and out of sleepiness I was violently sick and then started to feel better. They put me on a ward for observation, said they would review things tomorrow.
I felt ok apart from being weak as a kitten, so asked politely for a discharge form and signed myslef out.
Need a good nights sleep now, want to put the karcher together tomorrow and then back to work tomorrow night.
Could be of help or a warning to anyone else who experiences similar. If it does call 999 immediatley, it could save your life. Dont want to over dramatise but if I had waited to see if it would wear off,I think I would have died.I had very little energy and had to use every ounce of it too get a lttle air into  my lungs.Feels like drowning on dry land - scary. :y

Feel free to post any amount of tasteless jokes and jibes. :y ::) ;D

Nasty business, and I'm glad you're OK, Albs. :y

I had a similar, although much milder, reaction to my last dose of Aspirin about 12 years ago.

Had had mild asthma for a while with never a serious attack but started to realise it was getting worse than normal. By the time I'd decided that, living alone, I needed to call for help I struggled to make it to the phone so, like you, was glad I didn't delay. :y

Albs, I can only say that Mrs A did the right thing. Mrs LD suffers lots of allergies and we have been through this more times than I care to remember, including at least 2 occasions now where I have had to inject her with adrenaline to keep her alive :o :o

It's not nice, it's very scary but it can be managed. She rarely has to stay in hospital now as they know her routine.

I must say though... Discharging yourself wasn't a good idea. I hope they have explained about 2nd peaks to you? Be very aware that it may happen again within the next 24-36 hours as you are now going to be hyper-sensitive.

Glad you're feeling better now :y :y

Problem with allergies is that they can become serious at any given time without warning -- and often to things you are constantly exposed to --- like your system saying "sod this, I've had enough!"

Anyway -- glad you are OK. Is a really scary thing to have happen.

Expressed a similar observation to my GP and he made the point that the immune system generates antibodies against substances that it is exposed to. Makes sense, I suppose.

I know what you mean.  I have never suffered from Hayfever, but about 8 years ago I was diagnosed for it, Doc gave me Anti histemeens (spelling?) for it, then 2 years later it went again.

Well it seems to have come back (Suppose living next to a farm doesnt help) got to see the Doc again.
