Any Bike Mechanics??
« on: 10 May 2010, 22:08:43 »

Hi All,

I have a 1990 Honda CBR600FL and something went 'pop' in a puff of smoke from under the tank... :o :o :o

The ignition fuse has blown and the starter button is dead although all the other electrics are OK.......

Can anyone help? What went pop?  :'( :'( :'(

Are the ignition coils up under the tank ? possibly a live wire come loose and touched the frame/ tank or similar ? :-/

Is it not just the fuse that went 'pop'? I would be changing this first to see if it happens again. If this fuse is blown then the starter button would be dead.. :)

No something definatly went 'pop' under the tank, but the fuse did go as well.  I tried another fuse but it went straight away....

The coil crossed my mind, guess the tanks coming off........ ::) ::) ::)

Well, I found a piece of wire that was sparking under the petrol tank. Just taking the tank off now. Oh dear, seem to be spilling a bit of fuel, hope that sparking wire doesn't........

Can you buzz the fuseholder to frame with a continuity meter?  If so, you can waggle the loom to see if it's an intermittent short.  Lots of vibration on bikes can cause wires to rub on the frame/tank etc and destroy the insulation.

If all else fails use a methodical approach with a wiring diagram ;D
