A couple of years ago the admins and a lot of regular members posted in general chat/discussion on a daily basis. The admins rarely bother these days, and the members who used to frequent gen. disc. although still members dont tend to bother either.
The impression I had a few months ago was that there was far too much talk about global warming etc and this had put people off. Global warming has not been mentioned recently, and with the notable exception of the Israeli thread, politics hasnt been discussed as much lately as it was say 6 months ago.
So, presumably the problem goes deeper, and its obviously a serious one if TB is talking in terms of "if OOF has a future".I can only think that the admins need to spell out very clearly what direction they want this area of the forum to go in and they would probably need to help steer it back in the chosen direction.
If that doesnt work perhaps general discussion should be binned, returning the forum to a car only forum rather than the more general character it currently has.
The other ( more radical option) would be to scale the whole thing down and make it a membership by invitation only type of site - ie strictly for those members who are real omega enthusiasts, with a high level of knowledge etc. This, I would imagine would consist of perhaps 50 people, and altough it would be a shame for the rest of us, it would make the whole thing much more manageable for the admins.
We must bear in mind that the forum exists because they are interested enough to run it. The day they arent interested enough, it wont exist anymore. ;)

Also perhaps to bear in mind...........
This is a FREE forum, with no membership fees or charges. SOMEBODY is paying for the hosting, registration, etc etc, so all this abuse/misuse/silly behavior is on somebodys bill.
if this was a subscription based forum (and lots are....) would people who have to pay to post (as such) post such drivel, and if they could be banned/prohibited from reading/posting after they had paid, not think FIRST???
This forum can be read by ANYBODY, whatever age, and there is a moral responsibilty to keep it within the parameters of decency at all times. If it was a "closed forum"then that would be different, cos nobody apart from paid up members could view it.
My neighbour has an 11 year old car mad son who reads this forum, and is really interested in it, but if his mum was to see some of the language he can read..............well, you know.

Just a comment.

I hope & pray that this forum stays up & running as i 'thoroughly' enjoy it  :y :y :y

I certainly wouldn't be adversed to paying a nominal yearly subscription to keep it going.

I've not got that much mechanical knowledge but have owned numerous omega's over the years to at least put in some-kind of input but i do gain knowledge from reading posts from the 'experts'  :y

The general discussion area is by far my favourite as i enjoy chatting but don't particularly like Facebook etc (there's only so much u can say to friends & it's easier using the fone!)

So let's all have a chat, a laugh, a discussion & let's debate BUT to keep within the 'rules'  :y

As Sixstring has just said ....... ''there is a moral responsibilty to keep it within the parameters of decency at all times''  ;) ;) ;)

But more work for the Admins so is it not owed to them to refrain from the necessity to police bad language/insulting remarks & jokes/unsafe content? That would leave them to keep the site operating smoothly as well as have time to indulge in hobbies or spend with their families

It's impossible to say where "good taste" ends and "PC gone mad" begins.

Consider Jewish jokes.

We all laugh at the mother dominated boy, the chicken soup, the "priest, rabbi and vicar" stuff, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and all that schtick.  We don't find the "mean" (i.e. parsimonious) jokes so funny these days, because we've transferred them to the Scots.  And if we dared to portray a Jew as a long-nosed, greasy haired, child-corrupting sociopath we would ouselves be branded as Nazis.  Dickens may have got away with it 150 years ago - he wouldn't try it now.  But his portrayal of Fagin is kind by comparison with Christopher Marlow's Barabas.  And before that the Jews were accused of poisoning wells in the time of the Black Death.

And there we go - jokes to stereotypes to race-hatred in one paragraph.

The moderators can't win, because we all have our own personal lines which we don't like to see crossed.  I got irritated by the black dog joke that got removed, and I expressed my annoyance in the thread.  I could have just as easily pushed the alert button - I presume somebody did, because the joke got removed quite quickly.

The answer has to be light touch moderation, and the users have to say when they don't like the content of a thread, and use the alert button if they feel they have to.  We must all moderate the forum if we want it to continue.  Troublemakers must be stamped on.

Bores, of course, may continue to say what they like - nobody listens anyway. :)

The subscription issue has been discussed before - I don't think admins are in favour and want to keep info freely accessible (in line with the forum's "morals")

I think one of the reasons is not wanting to create different "classes" of members...  :y

I've followed this thread. I wasn't going to post on it - but thought I will share my views:

Bear in mind, these are MY OPINIONS ONLY, on how a few improvements MAY be made.

We have 8,225 users. Granted a large number of them are not all that active - but regardless, we still have a considerable number of members. These people will be from a range of backgrounds, upbringings, races and cultures. Frankly, this thread could be 5 pages, or 500 pages - no amount of discussion will ever make everyone share the same views, or allow everyone to live in harmony.

To this end - some only things that we, as a community can do, are:

A) Think before posting. We're ALL, without exception, guilty at some point of posting something we later either regret, or think we could have been much more tactful with.

B) On the flipside, If you read a post which offends you - again, stop and think for a minute. Consider that the poster quite likely did not mean any offence. If, after sensible adult discussion, you cannot reach a solution, and you still want something done about the post you find offensive - tell a mod. They will look into it.

C) If you REALLY feel a post is inappropriate - do one of two things. Firstly - consider a POLITE PM to the poster. It may well be they weren't aware of the impact of their words. You may find they apologise, explain, and rectify. If not - take it up further.

D) Bear in mind, if you post something up the forum, you are INVITING opinions. If, as a result of this, someone posts a reply and perhaps disagrees, or is blunt in what they say - bear in mind that you asked for the replies. Unless someone is being offensive, accept people may not agree with you.

E) While I have no doubt the moderators invite and welcome people's opnions on all aspects of the forum - keep it in mind, that ultimately, their say (and decisions) are final.

F) If you notice someone breaking the rules - for example, postcount cirucmventers.. don't make lengthy threads / replies trying to point out the error of their ways in public. It just fuels the fire of discontent even more. Instead - consider a polite PM, and / or just leave it to the Mods.

Remember, sometimes it is better to let a small "offence" slip under the rug, than create a big fuss, and subsequently all the bad feeling / upset that follows.

I have, on a couple of occasions, seen new threads started by members, solely to alert certain people they've broken a "rule". My personal opinion, especially having seen the results, is that this isn't an acceptable or effective way of addressing such things - and would discourage anyone from doing this.

These are just a few things that have occured to me while thinking about the "situation" and some recent posts.

I don't claim to be a goody goody - I have personally made a number of of the mistakes I have advised against in this very post, as most of us probably have at some time.

But let's not dwell on matters passed... (indeed, that may also be part of the problem)... and try and move on  in the right direction, without any bad feeling  :y
