Acetone What Is It
« on: 19 April 2007, 10:34:32 »

I have Been Doing Some Reading On The Web (You Can Tell Its A Quite Day at Work) And I have seen lots of threads and posts from different Forums Swearing Acetone is the best thing since sliced Bread as an Additive to petrol.

What is it And where Do you get it and does it do what everyone is saying makes the car run better and better throttle response and MPG and so forth.

You will find it in SWMBO's make up bag!

Nail Varnish Remover!

Not sure I would use it for anything other that removing stains / nail varnish myself!

Will stick to STP / Redex / Forte

Acetone is probably the one of the most 'violent' paint-removers you can buy as a a consumer... even as nail polish remover, it has now been generally replaced with less reactive substitutes, though you can still buy the original stuff.

Problem with Acetone is that it attacks plastics and many other materials, so should really be used only on unpainted metals and glass... in fact it should best not be used al all.

I can see how adding Acetone to petrol may help remove varnish and other deposits from the full system, but it may be harmful to some elements in the system such rubber seals or paper filter. As said above I would stick to conventional fuel system cleaners such as Redex / STP/ Forte, which are generally based on turpentine and in the right dosage. I will take longer to get there and will require repeated use, but it is a safer way of doing it.

And ultimately, if the injectors are badly clogged, no fuel additive will help and you will need to remove them and have them professionally cleaned suing ultra-sonic cleaning equipment.

Oooh good, a chemistry question - I can contribute to the forum at last!
 :y
Don't go putting acetone in your engine as it will degrade any plastic/rubber.  Especially don't use nail varnish remover as this has lots of additives to prevent stripping fats from the skin.  Note I said it strips fats and oils - I don't think I'd want too much of that going on in my engine.  However, to clean parts removed from the car it's a top tip, although I prefer methanol.

Stick with the redex/STP - they've done the research and believe me, it would be more proftable for them to just sell you a bottle of smartly labelled acetone.....

As you are obviously into your chemicals (;)), know what will remove glue deposits from my (I think) plastic headlight lenses?

Acetone can be obtained in commecial quantitys from fibre glass (GRP) suppliers costs about £5 for five ltrs. It is an extreamly volotile solvent with a very low flashpoint, and can rapidly break down some plastics and rubber compounds, as said I wouldn't put it in a car engine
