Egg on my face...
« on: 25 June 2010, 12:18:21 »

A week or two back I was saying that I was happy with TV rental as I upgraded my old Philips 32inch to a Samsung 37-inch.

Now, when the guy came to pick up the old screen he noticed a hairline scratch on the screen. It was so difficult to see that I hadn't noticed it until he pointed it out. He asked me to just sign a note to say there was a scratch, "to cover him".

I thought no more about it.

Today I received a bill for £170.39. All it says is: Chargeable items: PH32F5522
Description: Colour TV
Value: £170.39

I am pretty livid about this as I cannot see how a tiny scratch can warrant a £170 bill. I phoned them up and they said I will have to write in to dispute the claim.

Grrrr. Think I might go out, buy a new telly and scrap the contract. >:( >:(

Yep, I'd be asking them to come and get their telly and shove it......

They've no doubt had the value of the telly off you already in rental, and a bit of wear and tear is to be expected.

Frustrating without doubt Nick :( With the competitive pricing now seen in this market does it make sense to continue renting?

I would certainly dispute the bill and at the same time ask them to remove the replacement.

So, if you pay this £170 are they replacing any parts to make it mint - NO

Will they re-rent out the TV - NO

What do they do with Ex rental TV's - Either use them for spares or out them in auctions etc to make space

Did you sign a form saying you accepted it in mint condition - Could it have been there from day one and so small you never saw it.  ::)

Wonder if the collection guy did it knowing how to work the system.

Google the company and put complaints on the end of the search, if there are plenty of similar complaints then print them out and send them to the company and offer to see them in court telling them that that is approx 5% of evidence againt them.

Also offer to polish the scratch out (Dont know if thats possible - but worth a try)

Just how old was the Philips TV?

If it was more than 3 years old, I doubt if they can rent it out again, even from a "bargain" department, so their claim is unreasonable.  And anyway, if it was more than 2 years old, and it really was a barely visible scratch, it should be "fair wear and tear", I would have thought.

If it was less than 2 years old, you didn't need a new television.  ;)

I have written to them with the following list of demands to be received by return mail:

1.      A full engineer’s report on the scratch
2.      An estimate of the cost of scratch repair
3.      Confirmation that the TV functions correctly and that the hairline scratch does not affect the display in any way.
4.      The company's write-off value of the television
5.      An independent assessment of the equipment’s market value
6.      Confirmation that I may view the television in person to confirm that it is currently in the same condition as when it left my property

I'm a tad cross about this.  ;) >:( >:(

Easy to answer

1.      A full engineer’s report on the scratch

You wont get one as they only have service technicians, not engineers

2.      An estimate of the cost of scratch repair

New panel, the anti reflective coating means they cant be polished out and very few have a replaceable glare filter.

3.      Confirmation that the TV functions correctly and that the hairline scratch does not affect the display in any way.

Will be interested to see what they say on this one.

4.      The company's write-off value of the television

As its a capital assett it would have been writted off after 3 years so the answer should be zero.

5.      An independent assessment of the equipment’s market value

Lol....

6.      Confirmation that I may view the television in person to confirm that it is currently in the same condition as when it left my property

Good idea.
