This is what happens when police officers are not armed as a matter of course - there can be no immediate and effective counter to such incidents as they happen.

The operation seems to have degenerated into farce with heavily armed police officers and soldiers roaming the countryside looking for this man while confining citizens to their homes or restricting their movements.

The fact that resources have been drawn from the length and breadth of the country - including Northern Ireland -indicates to me that the capability of any local force to deal with such matters in real time, is woefully lacking.

.......and with the inevitable cutbacks that are.....unavoidable...

armed police arent allowed to shoot him unless theres imminent threat to life, the only life he's threatening at the moment is his by eye witness accounts - i guess the police are waiting for him to kill himself or give up - theres plenty of snipers there who could take him out if they were allowed to :o

A Tornado?.....hardly appropriate! ::)

....my choice would be an A10 Warthog; a quick strafe with the 30mm. gatling and problem solved! ;)

The Tornado will, at a guess, be using a "Raptor" pod ... this is an extremely high tech camera pod, not just a heat seeking one. Used for all sorts of surveillance and extremely capable. Another guess the pictures will not go to the Police .. but to specialised photo-interpreters whose day job is looking for the hide outs of snipers and insurgents.... :)

slightly off subject but that makes me laugh - seems there was an incident on a motorway a few years ago, armed police called and they shot dead a guy waving a sword arround and he was 20 feet away from anyone.  A gun at 20 feet, shoot the bugga, but not a sword.

Have not followed this current stoty but image if they just took him out from a helicopter how many £M's would be saved in trials, appeals and a room for one in a HMP.

 If I were flying one of the choppers I'd seriously consider an "engine failure" followed by a bit of autorotation and... splat!

Going back to Skrunties comment  "... there was an incident on a motorway a few years ago, armed police called and they shot dead a guy waving a sword arround and he was 20 feet away from anyone...."

A friend of mine who shows military Russian motorbikes at War & Peace Show and the like was riding the M25 to a show early one morning when he found himself boxed in by unmarked cars, within a moment he was spreadeagled on the tarmac with a gun at his head.

Apparently a CCTV op had seen grenades on his bike...

They were plastic, he had forgotten to stow them away with the machine gun as was his habit!    :D

Full armed response - good to know they are on the ball, they had a good laugh and several came to the show later on.
