What? no jim clark ?

Right On! too young to see him race but man! have you seen in car footage of him? such seemingly small steering inputs but the speed and line through the corners was unbelievable! Would be between Clark, Senna and Moss for me. Three drivers who were uber-quick jumping into anything; touring cars, sports cars, F1, it didn't matter with these guys, they could just drive anything fast

Senna was beyond doubt the greatest ever,
Mansell was good but unbearable to listen to and always someone elses fault when things went tits up...
Schumacher was brilliant but no charisma or humilty when faced with better drivers...

Senna delivered every race and his last gasp qualifier laps were beyond reality sometimes...

A tricky one, but my own personal favourites have to be Mansell and Senna. They were racing when I first started going the the British GP at Silverstone in 1988 at the time the turbo engined cars were being phased out and reverting back to normally aspirated. That year the Williams team had opted to race with a normally aspirated engine while most of the others were still using turbo's. Mansell still managed to take 3rd place despite having a much less powerful car - quite an astonishing achievement. Then there were moments such as racing wheel to wheel with Senna while flat out (Sliversone I think) only millimetres away from each other at nearly 200mph and then there was the monumental battle with Senna at Monaco after Mansell had to relinquish his lead to Senna with a forced pit stop. The remaining laps were edge of your seat stuff as Mansell done everything in his power to try and get past Senna but was just impossible on that circuit. If I recall, Mansell was so drained he had to be helped out of his car at the end of the race. Truly magnificent racers.

1992 race and senna stopped mansell from winning 6 out of 6 races mansell had to have a tyre replaced after a slow puncture was discovered and being 3 or 4 laps to go had to pit senna having been told mansell was pitting stepped up to the plate and grabbed 1st and held mansell who was in a far better car to second, then again senna was the master of making his car seem bigger the it was

Of the current lot, Hamilton impresses me the most. He may just turn out to be on the all time great list in a few years.

Would just like to say that I agree with that.

I loved the way that this young English lad just burst onto the scene with all of this confidence and all of this talent.

He was'nt overawed by anything. and did'nt allow himself to be intimidated by all of these big famous household names.

Even though it was his first season, the way he drove that car with such skill and such determination, you would think that he had been in F1 for years.

I just wish our footballers had the same self confidence.

Going back to the initial point of this thread though, Senna for me as well.

well lets open up a can of worms, and ask the un-askable Who was/is the greatest F1 driver ever?I have several possible answers depends on you knowledge of the sport.

1 Juan Manuel Fangio between 1951 and 1957 he won
   the championship 5 times in 4 different cars
2 Graham hill the gentlemans racer

3 Sterling moss greatest driver never to have won the
   F1 crown
4 Ayrton senna need i say anymore

Ayrton Senna - jedi-like car control coupled to a ruthless racer

Jim Clark - the most naturally gifted driver of all time and head and shoulders above his peers

Juan Manuel Fangio - amazing ability and completely dominated his era - the original Schumacher but with wit, style, compassion, humour and generosity by all accounts

Michael Schumacher - can't deny he owned F1 while he was racing (cept the last bit ) 

the best tho?.........cant split Clark, Senna or Fangio and I'd put Jackie Stewart above Schmacher for talent and what he's given the sport

I would put the toilet cleaner at Silverstone above Scumacher for what he has given to the sport. ........at least his contribution has been positive.
