He's in a difficult position - his job is to increase the size of the Catholic Church in a time when Catholism, or any other Christian following for that matter, is shrinking rapidly in the western world.
Whilst I suspect that the BBC have, as usual, done a Daily Mirror and taken a quote out of context, the Pope should be more media savvy, as JPII was.
Still, the Vatican voted in a more 'tradtional' Pope than his predecessor, presumably thats what they thought was needed.
Some of what (I think) Pope Benedict is trying to say has some grounds - for centuries, various religions have created order and structure to societies around the globe. As we in the western world move more away from that, are our own morals dropping?
It certainly seems to me in the UK that society is degenerating, with people only thinking purely of themselves, and sod everyone else. The line between right and wrong is shifting rapidly downwards. Whether this is lack of faith amongst the population, or general empowerment (or are they related

), who knows.
In case anyone thinks I'm a (insert whatever term for someone fanatical about their faith), I am sadly not a believer. I did have a broadly Christian upbringing like most people my age, though my school did insist on teaching most of the major religions.
