An interesting challenge that.  I know what you're saying but should someone in his position be beholden to the media?  Not that I think The Papacy is a valid position you understand. ;)

In the modern world an organisations leader is also a public figure. As a public figure the media and its ability to access great areas of the planet is a reality and one you MUST be aware of and deal will effectively.

So yes, it comes with the modern day job sadly.

Sometimes you have to shock in order for your words to be taken in.  Sadly, the media have no method of monitoring the actual take-up or understanding of the population at large.  It is quite conceivable that the majority will understand and accept what he says but the opposite will be reported.  If that were the case then he's done the right thing (according to his beliefs, that is).

This Pope is a liability and definately does not appeal to non Catholics

Everyone liked JP2 :y  including non Catholics
