MOT cons
« on: 25 September 2010, 11:04:49 »

It's back - no problems - not even an advisory, which is odd, because it got one for the rear shocks last year

Just read the post from Jereboam in another thread.. highlighted above....
I just took my Laguna back to the garage for a couple of tyres and said whilst they had it in, do the advisories, which included, leak at manifold, exhaust rubbers, handbrake near limit, and a couple of other things.
When I picked it up, he only charged me for the tyres....so I said 'did they not do the other stuff'....he said there was nothing wrong with it. >:( When questioned, he just shrugged his shoulders >:(

I think it just goes to show what little value you can place on an MOT as far as the general condition of your vehicle is concerned.

I got an advisory about the exhaust manifold blowing the first year I had the car, but never again.  Possibly it got fixed when they did the timing belt, but the engine hasn't had any other major work done on it.

And my battery was drained yesterday morning, so I had to jump start the car.  I forgot to warn the man.  He drove it about 20 miles, I think, and when I came to use it again the battery was flat.  He never said anything about it, but he must have had to jump start himself, because the battery is dead as a doornail this morning (despite being on charge overnight) and I've just paid Halfords an arm and a leg to replace it.

If it happened once you could probably understand it....but it has happened before. >:( Same garage
My van went in last year and had a list as long as your arm as advisories. As I have only done 2000 miles more in it, I put it in two weeks ago for MOT without doing any work, and it passed with no advisories (taking into account that it is an 'N' reg and is now ancient!!!!) ;D ;D

I have also wondered about this - surely there is a check done by the garage on the MOT databse before the MOT to see what was advised previously and they look to see evidence of those things being replaced/repaired......  seems to be a common sense approach to me.

I have no idea if the MOT system allows advisories to be logged officially.  I can't see why it should.

If there are signs of damp around dampers then I would expect an advisory if they checked-out OK on bounce test.  If the damp wasn't actually hydraulic fluid then it may well not be there the next year.

I can't see a problem really.  Advisories flag-up areas that you might like to look at.  Excellent.

Advisories are logged
check history on http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECHID-Internet-History-Request.jsp

Always worth a check before you buy a car as its a good way of tracking mileage etc.

Best place to take a car for an MOT is the local council testing depot or anywhere that dosen't do repairs as they will should give you a fair assessment of the vehicle safety standard.

Yes, same MOT station 2 years runnig

1 year - rear bush advisory
next, no advisory
changed em and knankered.

No other advisories either, so went for geometry - wishbone bushes persished so couldnt align.

What are we paying for?

I think maybe a government run test stations, which DO NOT offer any repair services may be a better option, a more 'honest' opinion possibly. and leave the garages to the repairs.

How long before the government saw the repairs as a nice little earner?

They use that system in Spain. Lovely clean, efficient purpose built stations. Only three or four a county. Repairs are carried out elsewhere in a normal garagae or by the person. It would cost a lot to implement in Britain and the garages would lose a lot of dosh. The MOTs cost about the same as in the UK. You can even book your appointment online.
