Most intriguing and I certainly can believe the person is speaking into a black object, just as anyone does now into a mobile phone.

Was it an in-joke though by Charlie to have this character with a phone, the joke being it would be impossible for 1928 so therefore funny to an audience? :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

This rather reminds me of the Soleway Firth Spaceman of 1964:

I also recall another photograph that was in the papers during the early 1960s of the Sellafield Nuclear Power Station, and in it you can see what appears to be a "spaceman" that was not evident (apparently) to the photographer at the time.

I have never heard in both cases a really satisfactory explanation of what, why or whom caused those images.  People try to explain but cannot, just as with the Charlie Chaplin film, and of course UFO sightings / pictures / evidence generally ;) ;)

i dont know whether someone has turned the fire off without me knowing, but that  got me gossebumps all over! :o

Well they clearly also time traveled a shed load of infrastructure back in time to like base stations, radio links, digital exchange systems, packetised networks the whole shooting match.

 ::) Yup, that was all there then.....it`s just that 'they' have managed to keep it secret until the last couple of decades. ;D
