the 3 things that wind me up the most!
« on: 07 May 2007, 22:56:06 »

these are the three things that wind me up the most while driving, whats everyone else's??

1. people that think you are to close behind and slam on their brake, its one of the most dangerous things that happens

2. when your following someone for mile after mile at a constant 45mph wether it a b road or though  a 30mph area they stay at 45mph, and then when you have an oppoutunity to pass then beep and flash and have a fit cos you have overtaken them.

3. same as above but try to hold you off. idiots

number 2 is normally a flat cap in a rover, and 3 tends to be someone in a corsa or a ford ka that seems to have takes its bumpers from some sort of spaceship.

we really should have more traffic cops to sort these idiots out. thats my only reason agaisnt cameras, they dont catch the numpties that are not speeding but are causing just as much trouble. thanks

not a lot winds me up, i am pretty laid back.

the only time i get stressed is when people are driving in such as way it places me or others in danger, as far as i am concerned then need to be re-educated as to the error of their ways, i find a slap sometimes works

Number four on your list should be middle or outside lane hoggers on an empty carriageway.

'Are you overtaking? I don't think so... PULL OVER!!!'  >:(

Maybe, that if this happens to you often, you need to review your following distances.

Your definition of a safe distance may not be the same as what someone else finds comfortable.

I have driven over hundreds of thousands of miles, across England, Scotland, Wales, and Europe, and I have NEVER had this happen to me, EVER. The reason? I always leave a v large gap between me and the car in front (much more than a few seconds).

When I'm holding back like this, I see all the cars in the distance sat bumper to bumper, doing 70mph. If the front one were to brake hard, then they would all be like dominos.  whereas I would stop at leisure.

When holding this far back, and looking at them all driving so close - to quote yourself... THEY are the "idiots"

You may say my following distances are excessive, but, I'm never at risk of rear ending anything, I know for sure I'm never making anyone uncomfortable (I'm not the type to want to do that)... and... oh look... I got somewhere 30 seconds slower than the tailgaiters in front... big deal!

I COMPLETELY agree, some people's dawdling habits are a danger and people who are so stupidly slow are a liability...

However, the people dawdling compared to the people tailgaiting is extremely low

The one thing traffic cops need to focus on the most is tailgaiting.

It's by far the most dangerous, and most selfish activity that happens all the time on todays roads.

You beat me to it James.  My number 1 pet hate is drivers overtaking on the motorway and slicing off my front end to fit in the large gap I have left in front.  Forcing me to switch into the next lane to keep a safe distance ahead.  I've never hit anyone from behind - but it has happened to me TWICE.  :(

I saw a woman on Friday plucking her eyebrows with tweezers whilst waiting at a junction to pull out, as the guy in front of me was texting on his mobile phone >:(  I think I'm gonna start wearing a high viz jacket  ;)

If someone drives too close to me, I slow down even more.

This is not to piss them off, or try and "teach them a lesson"

Not by any means.

It is an attempt to minimise the severity of any impact, should the tailgaiting tit ram me up the backside.

If they pull back... I speed up.

I'm not prepared to put myself and my passengers at unncessary risk, especially with children in the car.

People should just chill.

So what if someone is doing 45 on an A road. Allbeit annoying, they are not breaking the law.

But if you get up close and try and push them on, then you are driving dangerously and aggressively, or at least without due care and attention.

Just take a deep breath, wait for a safe chance, and overtake.

With regards to the light flashing, this has never happened to me, when overtaking anyone. Probably because I always pull out before I get too close (I don't adopt the "overtaking") position taught in Roadcraft... if I needed to use that technique, I would wait for a better chance to overtake in 100% safety.. and I pull back in, only when I am well past the car I'm overtaking.. (Because in my initial judgement, the overtaking opportunity allows time for this)

Drivers will flash lights usually because their "space" has been encrouched on.. and... rightly so. The intended purpose of "flashing lights" is to "alert other drivers of their presense"

So, maybe if you are cutting in too close to them - they feel the need to alert you to the fact that they are there, and you are in their space.

A google search on Defensive driving, returns good results..

The bottom line is that everyone has a different driving style and all of us strongly believe that we drive in the best way. Ideally what we all need is to learn and respec each other on the road and most of all forgive other peoples mistakes.
I'm fed up of idiots that prefer to cause an accident just because they have priority or because they follow the rules while being politically correct on the road and ignore everyone else. We need to understand that we are not machines where you programm a set of rules and we all run as we supposed to, we are human beings with individual behaviours and characters and we need to respect one another on the road.

I couldn't agree more to this

One question though, does accepting someone elses driving style mean you should A) let them sit an inch from your bumper... or b) Pull over when safe and let them pass ;)

It's very important to make allowances for other people. And it's often unimportant who is right or wrong

Some people should just not be on the road though. This morning driving to work on the A436, went around a blind bend, thankfully at a sensible speed... and a white Pug 307 was on my side of the road, trying to overtake a lorry. It was a VERY near miss, and would have been messy (head-on at 60mph for me and probs the same for him)

Driving styles aside, there was no need for him to have even begun overtaking, because there was NOT enough visibility for him to do so.

My blood boils in these situations, especially when kids are being transported.

I think the point being made was they do 40-45 on the national speed limited  A road, BUT when they get to a 30 limit they still do the same 40-45.

The last 5-7 mile to my parent is A road that has a couple of 30 limits and some fairly tight bends, the number of people who plod along at 40, then do the same speed through the 30 limit realy realy annoys me!

Number 1 is not dangerous at all.
The only dangerous thing there is driving TOO CLOSE in the first place.
If you have left sufficient stopping distance this cannot happen.
